Chomsky's in Denver tomorrow

At DU. Free tickets.
http://alumni.du.edu/s/1150/index_2col.aspx?sid=1150&pgid=1855&gid=1&cid=2933&ecid=2933

Some might want to go just to protest outside but others might want to hear his analysis of US foreign policy.

A little far for me. I generally disagree with Chomsky, but I find him entertaining.

A smart guy with some very liberal sensibilities. Last time I saw him on tv he was accusing the U.S. government of doing some things in foreign policy that I think we should be doing, but aren't. His overall take on conservatism is interesting, albeit a bit scary since he actually believes what he's saying, and there are people who take him seriously.

Read about it here:

He's a remarkable collector of historical tidbits but his conclusions are a bit too firmly in place for me. I think he's well worth a listen though, as his info is provocative.

I heard him in the late 80s in Seattle.

I saw an interview with him on some online forum. Might have been FORA TV or the Charlie Rose show or something along those lines. I found it interesting. Mostly for his recollections on his early life and seminal influences hanging around diaspora anarchist bookshops in New York as a kid. Explains a lot about where he gets his religion from. And I dont mean of the superstitious variety. Don't know if I'd pay to hear him speak after seeing that interview.

That's because you never read and were tested on these books in grad school:

"Aspects of the Theory of Syntax"
"Syntactic Structures"
"The Sound Pattern of English" with Morris Halle

The first two were good, the third was pulled out of the lower end of the alimentary canal

No charge. I was surprised to learn in that Wikipedia link that his dad belonged to the IWW. Spanish anarchists in the Civil War had a strong influence on him.

He is a professor of linguistics and a social commentator.

Hate him or not, he is epitomy of a libertarian. His ideas:

No foreign intervention for the US.

Tax in a fair manner.

Helping the US poor comes before enriching foreign despots.

Where would we be today if his preachings were followed since 1990?

No wars in Iraq or Afghanistan.

GE would be paying taxes.

No government feeding of the real estate bubble, thus no collapse of the economy in 2008.

A managable Federal debt.

From the one interview with him I saw on the tube and his comments on government and the conservative movement, I didn't get the impression of him as a libertarian, even though he apparently claims to be one. Perhaps he and I don't disagree to the extent that I thought.

chomsky usually has everything figured out, long before everyone else.

now that howard zinn is gone, he's about the best one left.

at least when it comes to current events. ( alas, i know nothing of linguistics, and probably am too old and ignorant to learn )

I was wondering how Chomsky was thinking of his own life right now. He's 83, Zinn was a good friend of his, his wife died a few years ago. It can't be easy.

well, he still enjoys cognition and oration. (both of which he excels at)
not sure if he believes in change, the future, etc. or if he even thinks about it. am i wrong to think that he's kind of a 1950's agnostic existentialist .. in a post-modern world? but yes, i'm sure it's a little lonely.
