Indoor Pot Production Uses 1 Percent Of U.S. Electricity, Study Says

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/04/14/marijuana-production-carbon-footprint-environment_n_848865.html?ncid=txtlnkushuff00000003

Pot-smoking environmentalists take note: Grass might not be green. A new study reveals that indoor marijuana production carries a shockingly large carbon footprint.

GOOD reports that Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory researcher Evan Mills, Ph.D., has released a surprising new independent report, “Energy up in Smoke: The Carbon Footprint of Indoor Cannabis Production.” Mills reports that indoor Cannabis production uses 1% of the nation’s entire electricity consumption. This comes to energy expenditures of $5 billion per year.

While 1% may not seem like a lot, the report claims that smoking one single Cannabis joint is equivalent to running a 100-watt light bulb for 17 hours. That Cannabis cigarette carries two pounds of CO2 emissions.

you want to talk water waste, try an ethanol plant.it takes something like 1-200 gallons of water to make 1 gallon of ethanol, and for what??corn right now is $7.00 a bushel.i think i heard one time that if corn got over something like 3.75 a bu.they were past the break even point so "your" gov'ment is subsidizing the other 3.25 a bu.and it can't be piped it has to be mixed at the terminal.so i would take a 1% power usage to grow pot over ethanol anyday..

That's how they catch them, the utilities look for say a raised ranch that's using $1k a month worth of electricity. They also jump the meters which is a big red flag.

Aint that the truth... I knew a guy in the '80s who got nailed with a grow operation in his garage. Got him because of excessive electricity usage. Got 20 years

Stupid question, but how do they come up with 2 lbs. CO2 emissions? Is that a cumulative amount emitted at each stage from seed to smoke or is some weird calculation like heating/cooling degree days? You hear of the tons emitted by every car per year, but how is that measured?

I'll bet the number is higher than 1% as a majority of indoor growers bypass the meter, so the electricity isn't even accounted for. I've replaced a few incoming services due to "creative" power stealing setups. I'm with the guy who said just legalize it so it can be grown outdoors like it was meant to be. I wonder if this "study" is just a setup to help pave the way for legalization?

It seems such an obvious area to save money, even generate revenue, and reduce crime-saving further money. Why are those on both sides of the isle ignoring decriminalizing pot?

That makes sense....I was wondering how they manages to come up with the 1% figure. You would think that with all this information out there that all the growers would be busted.

Not all growers use metered electricity.
One of the more colorful pot growers had his crop located on large trailers. The trailers were moved from an underground garage into the sun and kept in the garage when revenuers were about. I believe there was also a diesel powered generator as back-up.

The other thing that just hit the radar for determining whether you have a "grow farm" in your area is the fact that since the switch from analog TV over to Digital TV Service is that IF you were having regular, stabil DTV Service in your neighborhood, AND NOW YOU'RE NOT...there's a very real chance someone in the 'hood is cranking out cronic with the use of "grow lights" and related materials.

It appears that because MUCH OF THE ILLICIT WIRING these places install (Who's going to call in a licensed electrician?) cause so much interference that some digital television recievers (and even some cable boxes) fail due to the static (noise) being generated by all the equipment the Cronic-crowd is using and have wired up.

So, if your reception sucks and it didn't before, instead of calling and *****ing at the TV stations or the cable/satellite companies, call the LEOs and their K-9 units out to the neighborhood and left them "sniff around" for the problem.

Who knows? You MIGHT get a reward and your television reception might get an improvement.

Because a certain industry that jails and polices people wouldn't need as much money if a certain herb was decriminalized.

Think of it. Most prisons are filled with cannabis users and dealers. A whole department within the DOJ basically tries its best to keep people from using a drug that isn't harmful to its users.

People have made their careers off of the prohibition of cannabis.

An individual human emits 10.2 kg of carbon in a year. Trying to measure carbon emissions is an epic joke. We live in an ecosystem that we should be trying to help sustain our daily activities.
