Navy Chaplains to Officiate Gay Marriages

Quote:
The Navy will allow its chaplains to officiate same-sex marriages once the military's ban on gay marriage is officially lifted this summer, according to a new memo written by Navy's head chaplain, Rear Admiral Mark Tidd.

"Regarding the use of base facilities for same-sex marriages, legal counsel has concluded that generally speaking, base facility use is sexuality orientation neutral. If the base is located in a state where same-sex is legal, then base facilities may normally be used to celebrate the marriage."

BTW, I'm in the Navy. I figured it best if I beat the rest of y'all to the punch.

If it's legal in a given state, the military base located there has no legal basis to discriminate.

Yes they do...it's federally owned land and is not subjected to the laws of the state. The federal government does not recognize the marriages of same-sex couples and is prohibited from doing so by the Defense of Marriage Act. DOMA explicitly bars federal recognition of such marriages.

I they are smart, they will chose not to try to take that legal position. Based on the original post, they are smart enough not to push a losing position.

I marine friend of mine figures it's only a matter of time before any religion that doesn't recognize gay marriage will be declared illegal in this country.

Religious organization are free to practice whatever membership qualifications they want within their organization. That includes who they choose to let in their door to preform a religious ceremony.

And I'm glad they have that freedom!

But someday I will be able to get married. It's just a matter of time.

I do agree, however, think we need to have a discussion about their tax status.

I don't think so. After all, that means a govt can dictate what your religion can or cannot practice.

But I can already hear the arguments that go "What if a man wanted to marry his horse?"

What is there to discuss? If you allow M/F couples to file as a couple when they get legally married, what basis do you have to say F/F and/or M/M couples cannot?

Right after they abolish free speech, re-institute slavery and take away your guns.
