Late Night Rant. What Would You Have Done ?
Hi folks...I experienced an incident tonight that made me boiling mad.
Usually I say nothing and like to not make a scene but tonight it needed said and if I don't share this I will be up all night, mulling it over and over into the wee hours. Before I start, I want to say that I am open to any input, good or hostile, criticism or corrections you may think apply. Anyway....I was at the Waffle House for late dinner/sandwich. Bill, a friend was there doing his crossword as usual and on his third coffee. We are sitting side by side exchanging thoughts by hand and on paper...Bill is profoundly deaf....he's also 79y/o. The place was half full when a group of 5, consisting of one 17 to 23 'ish girl, three 20 something lads and a man and woman come in. They hover around looking for space to sit and find there are no 5 person areas to sit. 20 somethings take a chair along the wall where folk wait and the girl and older folk look around some more. The girl then walks up to Bill and said 'could he move'......Bill, being the polite, old school gentlemen he is, gets up and moves down three seats....so, there's a seat between the both of us now ! I would normally swallow my feelings and pass on this, but this time I was livid. I said..."You haven't asked this old boy to move for you , have you ?" She reddened up and nodded. I then said, "What sort of manners have you asking the oldest person in here to move so you can sit? Your discourtesy and bad manners are way out of line"....she moved away taking refuge behind the lady who was also turning a deep shade of red and the two lads shuffled around pretending not to have heard. Bill finally left after his 4th coffee wishing me goodnight with a tap on the shoulder...... the offending party noting now that we had been together. The girl didn't even acknowledge Bill or say 'thank you' as he left. I fumed through the rest of my food and eventually left.....the woman now hurrying to take my vacant seat....yes...I thought about returning to tell them how disgusted I was with them, but I let it be. All the way home I was thinking of things I ought to have said and so it brings me to this 'Rant.' My take was, it is up to the wait-staff to arrange seating and anyway, the Waffle House is a first come, first seated place . The girl didn't ask the black couple to move that would have freed up two seat...just my old pal Bill. So, how would you have handled it ? |

It's a tough call, if you had intervened more aggressively it might have just caused embarrassment for your friend; I assume that he knows you made a comment without causing a large scene. It sounds like you probably did the best thing under the circumstances; your friend knows you were not pleased with how he was treated, and the girl probably got the message about her lack of manners. No real harm was done, I would let it go unless he mentions it when you see him again.

I would have said,
"Please leave us both alone, and go away, my friend here is 79 years old and is deaf, show some manners for the first time in your whole life, as personally distasteful as you may find that"
(I am reknown for a TART mouth when I get really irritated.) Those selfish morons would have set me off too, I totally GET your anger..

BTW, I grew up in Georgia and now live in Nevada. One of very few things I miss about the old state was the Waffle House. That and sweet tea.
