Study: Homosexuality, celibacy not cause of clergy sex abuse

WASHINGTON — Researchers commissioned by the nation's Roman Catholic bishops to analyze the clergy sex-abuse problem say that homosexuality and celibacy did not cause the crisis.

The study says isolated priests who were poorly trained were affected by the increase in deviancy during the 1960s.

The analysis by the John Jay College of Criminal Justice will be released today.

So the deviance of the 60s has nothing to do with a strict vow of celibacy? Sounds like the two are at odds to me, but heck I'm just a cultural researcher...

The other side of the coin is that the catholic church has historically attracted people with "unusual" sexual orientations because it was a good place to hide. There was a time when anyone who wasn't married with a family by a certain age was considered suspect; becoming a priest was a viable alternative for a catholic who did not want to be married and didn't want to be subject to ridicule. The church needed bodies, they didn't ask too many questions.

What do you give a pedophile priest with everything?

this whole "blame the 60's" talking point has been around for a while. their repeating it doesn't make it any more valid.

Well, it is well known that cosmic fairly dust from the planet Hedonia of the solar system Alpha Hardonium found its way in unusually large quantities to our earth in the 60s via a quirk in the fabric of the space/time continuum so there might be something to that.

and just how did the 60's cause bishops to just shuffle them around instead of turning them into the cops or perhaps that old church favorite: burning at the stake?

now it all make sense.

however, all humor aside, this "study" is a pathetic whitewash, and should not be taken seriously by anyone. not only do the authors redefine "pedophilia" to mean sex with anyone under 10 years of age - 11 or older is, well, not pedophilia, but something else? - but they also don't seem to acknowledge the rich, glorious history of the groping priest that goes back hundreds of years, long before the "sexual revolution" of the 1960's.

In this case, I don't have a big problem with burning them at the stake.

What a load of crap!

At lunch today three of my cronies were catholic and had been alter boys. One recounted a story that when he first became an alter boy he was told by an older one who was 13 at the time to never allow himself to be alone with Father Bob (he did not actually say the name) because he liked little boys in robes.

Its a sad day for the catholic church when 13 year olds have more integrity than a priest and the ones above who covered it up.

Well its my academic role. Its a cross between social philosophy and communication research, understanding the way that cultures interact within themselves and with each other. For example, my most recent paper was a rebuttal of a post-marxist theorist offering the way in which Egyptians employed facebook as an area of political criticism and helping to fuel the revolution. Much of the research is considered "soft", meaning that its not about quantitative analysis but rather based within the experiences of individuals to better understand how they perceive the world (although a lot of times it is a combination of both). By day I'm just a web data analyst in the corporate world.
