Why would you care about the composition of a liquid that might wind up in your drinking water?

Typical Democratic anti-business perspective. Carcinogens create jobs in the healthcare industry and boost the economy. Next you'll tell me that you're against defective amusement park rides and the repeal of those intrusive food safety laws.

I'm still waiting for the clean energy solution to replace mineral hydrocarbons.

Let's see how the Republican admin in PA goes on this. I live just south of the Marcellus Shale deposits and everyone, perhaps not the Republican locals, around here is holding their breath. I have my own well and I have no idea were the water in it comes from.
So far the g'ment has given the drillers just about everything they can-no clean-up after drilling, no disclosure of the chemicals used. |

How do you guys heat your homes and water? Electric I hope.

Electric from some skygod source because nobody would use mineral hydrocarbons. Nope, wouldn't be prudent. Natural Skygod electrons will destroy the evil energy companies. You'll see.

I use oil.
I would not trade cheap energy for clean water. |

Attention morons (the press): its spelled "fracing" and has been for years. "fracking" is what they do on BattleStar Galactica.
The complete lack of intelligence in the media about this is staggering. We have been fracing for years, since the 40's. It started as dynamite down the hole and hit the big time in the 70's when they set off a nuclear bomb underground. That didn't go as expected, it turned the rock to glass. We have used various chemicals over the years, and the pollution of a water supply is VERY rare. If you follow the news you will find that some honest studies concluded the occurrence of contamination is way less than is being portrayed. The ONLY reason this is coming up now is due to the fact that the Barnett drilling is near the urban areas of Ft Worth. It is a bunch of people chasing deep pockets. I can guarantee you that the people *****ing don't own any of the minerals. Follow the money (or lack of), works every time. You get more pollution from industrial dumping into surface water supplies like lakes and rivers. A frac job usually lasts < 1 day. Depending on where you are geographically, different types of fracs are used. Gelled diesel fracs were common in the 60's. We have CO2 fracs and N2 fracs. Foamed acid fracs. Most are just a common crosslinked water based gel if the formation is not water sensitive. If people wanted to worry, they would be asking what is used in the DRILLING fluids. That stuff sits in the well during the whole process, which can be several weeks or months (unless you air drill).

Good question, but who says they aren't disclosing that info? The companies that provide frac services (Baker Hughes, halliburton, Schlumberger etc) are hired by the producers to come and frac the well. They provide all the equipment and labor for the job. In Texas, and I assume elsewhere, the state regulatory board keeps track of the various chemicals that they are allowed to use per state law. Sort of like posting what is inside a chemical truck on the highway. When you complete a well, you fill out forms as to what type of fluids were used in the hole, the location of any fresh water sands, and various other nifty items.
I would guess that a company like halliburton is not going to answer every Joe Blows request for a chemical breakdown of their frac fluids. Most of this stuff is under patent and trademark protection anyway. Call Dr. Pepper and ask what the formula is for their soft drink. You won't get a response. Its just an analogy, obviously Dr Pepper won't kill you (normally), but I would bet there have been more deaths due to reaction to soft drinks than from frac fluid contamination.

The fracing companies have been repeatedly asked by concerned residents what they are going to inject into the ground. The fracing companies have replied it's a proprietary formula. So I say they haven't disclosed that info.
You get your water from your own well do you? |
