ROTC Making a Campus Comeback

Despite UC Berkeley's reputation as a center of '60s radicalism, the ROTC remained on campus and about 150 students are now enrolled.

That will happen when school is expensive and the job market for new grads is tight.

My wife was browsing student grades at her high school last week. Students who failed every other class due to never attending class at all somehow managed to pass ROTC. Nobody failed ROTC. Hmmm????

This may have something to do with the fact that one doesn't fail to show up for ROTC class without experiencing some unpleasant consequences. Of course, failing classes leads to other unpleasantness, as I'm sure these cadets and midshipmen figured out shortly after grades came out.

My school had one of the best ROTC programs outside of the Naval academy itself. It seems like a free ride from the outside but let me tell you, those kids WORK for their funding. Up at the crack of dawn for conditioning every day, strict zero-tolerance policy, have dress code around campus, etc. I have a lot of respect for my friends who stuck with ROTC and toughed it out.

I ran into a former student at a graduation party this past weekend. He's in the ROTC program at ASU. He was laughing about the fact that the university pays the ROTC organization to cleanup Sun Devil Stadium after all their home games. The club gets 7K dollars to clean up after EACH game and the university considers it a great savings. All members are required to show up for credit and participate in the cleanup. It takes them about 3 hours to earn 7 grand for their club, x how many ever home games plus other activities. Sweet deal.

My NROTC unit did the same thing working security, cleanup, and general labor. The more memorable ones included a couple of ARCA and NASCAR races, a pro football game, and a U2 concert.
