The caning of Micheal Fay

March 1994:Fay was the first caucasion to be convicted for the offense of vandalism, and sentenced to 6 strokes of the Rattan Cane.
Singapore had expected an outcry from human rights groups, but Bill Clinton got directly involved.
The question in the minds of many was, given this request from the leader of the most powerfull country in the world, would Singapore buckle?
Singapores relations with the United States were very important for economic, security, and strategic reasons.
Some of the Americans were presenting the caning sentence as a barbaric punishment that= torture since it would be bloody and leave permanent scars.
After weighing all factors, the government concluded that to waive the sentence-as Clinton suggested-would bring their laws, government and institutions into disrepute and contempt.
The stance was , "This was an issue of our sovereign right to punish those who break the laws in Singapore according to the laws of the land which were applicable to all"
Fay was jailed-and recieved four bloody strokes from the rattan cane.

A little caning can be a good thing. Don't vandalize stuff that isn't yours and you won't have to worry about it.

When Micheal Fay returned to the U.S. in June 1994, he had several run ins with US authoritys.
Years later, Clinton visited Singapore and during a dinner with Prime minister Goh raised the Fay topic in a lighthearted manner.

Clinton quipped " "You should have caned him more..and his father should have caned him earlier"

This episode shows that from time to time a small country must stand up to the intense pressure from a bigger country-in this case , a global superpower and the most powerfull country in the world-even though a high price may have to be paid.

I knew the family well, and my brother went to school with him in Kettering, Ohio for about a year. He deserved that caning and more. He is nothing more than a piece of white trash that is still bouncing in and out of trouble with the law. He was responsible for a rash of vandalism in Kettering and surrounding areas. He was sent to live with another family member in Singapore in an attempt to hide from those charges.

No story here corporal punishment is alive and well

Corporal punishment remains widespread in American schools and homes, largely because of a 1977 Supreme Court ruling, Ingraham vs Wright. The case centred on James Ingraham, a 14-year-old student in Florida, who allegedly disobeyed a teacher’s order to leave the school stage. Ingraham was held down and spanked more than 20 times with a paddle. He suffered a haematoma that left him bed-ridden for days.

Ingraham’s parents sued the school for violating the 8th Amendment that prohibits “cruel and unusual punishment”, and for denying his basic right of “due process.” But the Justices upheld school beatings as constitutional.

Corporal punishment retains a huge wellspring of national support. A study done in 2005 by SurveyUSA showed that 72 per cent of American parents believe “it is OK to spank a child”.

My sources here remember the situation as ..M. Fays parents divorced- his mother moved to Singapore, and married a local here. M. Fay got into trouble with the law in the States, and was sent To Singapore to live w/his mother and stepfather.
During the trial, his biological father came to Singapore and started a public/media smear campain- saying "Singapore was un-civilised-how dare them torture my boy', blah, blah, blah.

I suppose the daddy had forgotten why he sent his son out of the US to begin with.

Only problem was, his boy got wrong in the wrong country, and now is bouncing around with 4 permanent scars on his arse as a result of his own stupidity.

While I am not a parent, I am fairly confident that I would not support the idea of anyone other than my self disciplining my child.

I would have no idea what standards the teacher is using for their standard of guilt. Is their bias involved?

Bottom line is no one but me will lay a hand on my kid. And I doubt that would ever happen. None of my siblings nor my self were ever spanked as a kid ad we all came out fine. In my opinion spanking is a failure of parenting.

I know. What do I know. Im not a parent. I was a kid, I have nieces and I have an opinion.

It stopped in PA in the early 80's. Some kid was spread eagle against the wall. He either stopped a bit or the paddle went a bit high. He was paralyzed from the waist down. Or at least that is the story that was told.
I think inititally, the US population didn't like the notion of the caning. I think some attituded changed, when it was reported what he had done. There was a rash of incidences in the US as such. I forget what it was called back then. There was a bunch of black youths who were convicted of gang rape etc. Wrongly as DNA evidence latter pointed out. Still, many youths out of hand.
Now if it was Turkey, or Saudi Arabia, then one less problem child.

more states than I thought would be. they paddled in every school I went to, K-12. it was a deterrent; nobody wanted to meet "the board of education" up close & personal. truthfully, lots of kids that got it, deserved it. a disruptive kid ruins learning for more than just him.
