Escape Fantasy

I find myself thinking more and more about selling it all off, with the exception of the SL being put in storage, hook up an airstream behind a Roadmaster, and drift until I find the perfect place. I'd have enough savings to do this for 4-5 years and could stretch it out seemingly indefinitely if I found work at each stopping point, hung around for 3-6 months and move.

Anybody else thought about being a vagabond?

well, it's certainly a wonderful fantasy.

i would suggest that perhaps there are other things going on in your life, as this seems out of character for you. however, i apologize for prying or presuming.

Out of character to fantasize? There is alot of responsibility in my life right now coupled with a bit more stress. Its probably why I'm thinking about it more.

When the economy took a crap in 08', I lost my business, my home in Michigan..and started drifting.

Dont know what went thru my mind, anyway...I left the world behind.

Took it on down to Florida..then over to Frisco..boarded on over-seas flight, took it on down toThailand..took it on down to Singapore...

And I aint looking back.............

In your case, I suppose you may want to ask yourself.."What is holding me here"?

I wish you all the best.

I guess you are not in a position to ask him how its going.
The grass is always greener on the other side of the hill.

Tyler, if it's something you truly want to do then go for it. As I told Miguel during his quick visit, life happens. Do the things you want to do and are able to do while you're young and single. I would love to take a trip like he did and you're considering, but marriage and 4 kids later it's not in the cards.

As far as the trailer, I love old Airstreams. I'd probably go with something in the 20' range if it'd just be you and maybe a guest. It'd tow a lot easier and, while not quite as compact as Delibes', would offer quite a bit more flexibility for squeaking in places a 31' could never go.

That trailer looks like a good deal if the interior looks as good as the exterior. It is the size airstream I would buy too for my next trailer. You could use that trailer as long as you like and sell it for the same as you paid for it. It would be a real handful though towing with the softly sprung Buick. Better off with a suburban. (though I love the buick and chevy wagons.)

I would totally do this if I were not tied down by family right now. I think you have the perfect combination of resourcefulness and freedom to really enjoy this lifestyle.

The Airstream is cool but as long as you're driving the Roadmaster, the part of the fantasy you wrote about a long time ago that included a waitress will be unlikely to come true so you might as well go whole hog and wear checkered bermuda shorts and a gold chain.

I'd do it if I were you. Although I'd outfit myself a bit more compact, in maybe a 20 footer pulled by an 06 or earlier Tundra.

That Airstream looks like a great buy though. I shudder to think what a new one that size costs.

Wow, I'd love to read about your journey, Chilcutt. That sounds pretty interesting. You should do a thread like Miguel did. Post some pictures, too.

You guys are harsh towards the Roadmaster. Basically the same frame, same LT1 engine and transmission. With an aftermarket airbag rear suspension it could be done. Max Tow capacity stock is 5,000.

Then again, if I took a winter in Colorado I would have wished I kept the Tahoe with the same motor, but it doesn't look nearly as good. Just a s comfortable though. Max tow capacity 6500.

Like I said, its just a fantasy, if I did do this it wouldn't be until next year at the soonest.

No such thing as "fantasy".

I did it, and I could not be happier. You are probably at a point in your life in which you can have a degree of financial stability. Rent whatever possible, and finance your journeys.
