Thoughts on an '03 SLK32 AMG

Any insight into this car? Retractable top issues? Motor? I've read about supercharger probs, but not sure how prevalent.

I didn't realize they were so fast ??

The SLK32 starts to grow on me, looked at a SLK32 for sale and was very tempted. But if you are scared about the roof mechanics why not look at for a Chrysler Crossover SRT coupe. What I understood it's the same mechanics as the SLK32 and assembled in Germany and in my opinion a more interesting looking car.

One person's opinion.

The CLK320: It was made in the darkest days of Mercedes Benz build quality control and build quality, and is no candidate for a long term reliable keeper.

Besides this, it sold as the "cheap" Mercedes Benz sports casr, and it looks ugly and lacks panache and charisma (admittedly a subjective thing -- but it really does!)

If you want one with bettter build quality, the last Mercedes Sports sports car around then, that had it was the R129, and the used car market is soft right now, and some owners are shedding them to raise cash in the poor economy, so bargains abo0und, ekand.

The best bet for one of those is the 500SL, because the 300SL is too underpowered for that Panzerwagen, and the 12 cylinder V12 600SL too cantankerous, complicated and fussy and heavy and over the top and besides, the R129 is a good heavy, traditional highweay cruiser, not so much a sports car. The 500Sl is the best balanced choice but it is for higway driving and boulevard posing, NOT canyon carving like a BMW 3 seres. AMG or not.

I'd look for a nice used one in a nice color, never hit or rusted, with ALL books and records, with no soft top issues, (will have them if never used), and keep in mind you will need a hardtop hoist or stand for it, so they are not a good bet without a closed garage (whoch most owners had) for them.

Low mileage ones are common, because few sports cars were ever the family's primary vehicle, they are too impractical and lack meaningful luggage space or a usable bak seat eexcept for double amputees, small dogs or bags of groceries behind the front seat.

But I would suggest that you shoo away from the CLK32, AMG version or not.

To echo Jeremy Clarkson, the Crossfire looks like a dog doing its business. I think they're hideous personally SLK32 would be an interesting car, I wish MB offered manual transmissions here in the states though, if I were to drive a roadster like that I would definitely not want an auto, no matter how quickly it shifts.

It depends on what your key interests are. Mercedes trends to luxe appointments, convenience, but with a weight, performance and price penalty.

I say go for it. My sister has an SLK, and its been a fantastic little car. Can handle surprisingly well for an MB, and is comfy. Try before you buy, as they are small, and you might not fit all to well.

As for powertrain/drivetrain, the M112k/722.6 is fairly bulletproof, and can withstand fair amounts of abuse. The little kompressor motors (C230 kompressor) are the one with supercharger issues. The R170 is pretty much a W202 with 2 doors missing and no roof.... And I am in love with my W202!

Not sure if I could pull the trigger with those looks. Maybe it could grow on me? SRT coupe is much better looking, then again it's a Chrysler.

To old, and its an SLK, its a secretaries car.

I don't know about that vintage but I have a bit of wheel time on an 08 and I didn't really care for it. IMHO it felt like a cheap SL.

The Boxster is a better car for the money.

I always liked the Crossifire. It is mainly mercedes. Look at the dash, all mercedes. What is chrysler? Seats, steering wheel, sheet metal design....wheels. made in austria.

I'd want a coupe with a stick. I'd put on some smaller diameter mercedes wheels, the nineteen inchers are way too vulnerable to chuckholes for my taste.

Lovely cars.

The SLK is a girls car, no matter what version. The Crossfire is for people that think a vinyl jacket is just as good as a leather one. That's why different things are made: it takes all kinds to power the planet.

Have you thought about a newer but used SLK55 AMG? I always like that one over the original SLK.
