repairing ceramic

The ceramic bowl of our slow cooker has a crack. We continued to use if for a while but now the crack isn't watertight. The bowl is still structurally sound. Can the crack be sealed in a way that's safe for cookware?

Thanks,
Sixto

Stop drill the crack using a ceramic bit, use a food grade epoxy sealer. Of course, the bowl may still fail leaving you with a large mess in your kitchen, so I'd just recommend getting a new one.

On closer inspection the crack goes down one edge, across the bottom and is just climbing the opposite edge. It's no longer structurally sound.

Thanks,

I have an extra one you could have, but it would cost more to ship it than a new one would cost.

Is it, by chance, a bowl for a 7qt KitchenAid slow cooker?

The old-school ceramic with Hi and Lo are nice, but the new(er) GE with the removable liner, programmable settings and locking lid is pretty sweet, too.

These things really confound me. Ours works great, but the ceramic insert is crazed (and came out crazed after its first use). I have been told to toss out my old coffee mug as it's crazed, and can allow unsafe bacteria to take hold. Is this cooker safe? I've been using it with the assumption that it is; seems the heat would kill most bacteria anyway. Is my old DeKalb corn coffee mug really a threat to my health?

I think lead is a hazzard as well from some ceramics that have lost the structural integrety of the surface glazing. Of course bacteria will accumulate given a chance in the more porious substrate. I am not sure if a slow cooker on low reaches a high enough temperature to destroy all bacteria either. I thought about 160F was required.

It tends to be a throway society for many items. These are easily in the realm of those..Dare I say the vast majority of items we purchase are in fact as well now?

Secondary uses are sometimes possible as well with defective goods. At least you cannot claim you do not have a pot to piss in now.

Too true. Sadly, our slow cooker is less than 3 years old, and is not used all that often.
