Great JAG XKE but SICK 327 Chevy.. dies in gear??

Great JAG XKE but SICK 327 Chevy.. dies in gear

Hey guys,

I normally stick with Benz Diesels but when this came available as a weekend driver I couldn't pass it up.

Main issue: rough idle in PARK.. dies or about dies in any gear (Automatic trans) I have pulled off the carb and there was some junk in it but still has the same problem

I haven't WRENCHED on a 327 since High school and that was a FEW MOONS AGO...HA HA

There are only a few things it can be lack of fuel .. possible...but when you jump on it.. it GOES!!! , vacuum leak.. possible?

I replaced the Fuel filter..

Here are some pics and videos I send to Edelbrock.

intro

then watch this one... They are only a min or two long

Post a response and help point me in the right direction.... thanks

Great car! I think a 4.2 or 3.8 I6 would solve the problem I see their under the hood.

Yeah it sounds like jets. Definitely a carb problem, but last time I dealt with carbs was on my grandfathers boat so it was awhile ago.

I know they can be very sensitive to dirt, how deep did you go when you cleaned it?

Does that carb have an internal fuel filter like on the Quadrajets?

thanks for the quick comments.

I think I did a pretty good job clearing out the very minor dirt that was in the carb.

then I blew it all out with compressed air.

I too still think its a fuel issue but not at all sure why the RPMs drop so much with it going in to gear.

Edelbrocks do not have an internal filter..just a tight screen.

keep the ideas coming.. When I get it out on the road... it is FREAKING AWESOME... but as soon as you let off the gas coming up to a stop light I have to put it in neutral..then pop it back into drive..

Could it be a transmission vacuum issue? too much demand?

with it running spray a little wd-40 around the base of the carb.if idle changes you have a vacuum leak on the base gasket and this could be a case of the wrong gasket.years ago i bought a 2x4 offy intake for my 455 olds.had a pair of afb's.guy said he could never get it to idle.took carbs off and he had a q-jet gasket under the back carb, which left a gap on the rear butterfly.as for the mixture screws.they used to be on the front.and easy way to suck the crap out of em if it has a choke flap.rev the engine up to say about 2000 and then hold the flap shut until the engine about dies.90% of the time this will suck out whatever is in the circuit

Brake vacuum booster leak? Is there a vacuum line to the trans that could be letting in extra air?

It sounds like your carb float needs to be adjusted, but it could also be your coil wire is shorting out on the block or is breaking down internally. You can buy just a new coil wire and they are cheap so you might try that. Testing the wire with a continuity tester will not tell you if it is breaking down under a load.

Pull the plug wires from the top of the distributor cap and look for a blue powder on the wire plugs on down in the plug holes. The blue powder indicates the presence of arcing, building up the resistance level so your spark is not strong.

It could also be a leaking intake manifold, but this is not common on this engine.

Have you checked your ignition timing? If this engine has a set of points have you checked the dwell?

Also check your vacuum advance.

I know this is a lot of stuff to look at, but all of it, except the intake manifold, is cheap and easy.

Sounds like the idle air mixture needs to be adjusted.

Adjust your idle screw untill it idles at a normal speed in park 800rpm maybe. If the engine runs rough toss a rag ontop of the carb (it wont get sucked in dont worry) if the idle smoothes out you probably need to adjust your idle air mixture screws. I am guessing this cars sits a lot so I am suggesting you rebuild your carburator. By that I mean carb kit, float, filter, and a soak in real carburator cleaner.
So called mechanics like to screw around with carbs but dont understand the priciples of operation. That means they cant rebuild them and diagose problems. When you get that thing apart you should find something wrong like secondary throttle plates holding open just a bit or plugged air bleed etc.
Its my opinion that if you have to have a carburator the Quadrajet is about the best all around drivability and performance carb going.
Oh yeah if that thing has bosch platinums in it ditch them!

thanks for all the great comments..

I may have found part of the problem.

The big vacuum line coming off the carb to the PCV on the valve cover was very loose. Not on the carb end but on the Valve cover end.

The PCV was very loose and didnt take much to pull it off. Once I looked at it the rubber seal was half gone and someone had put some sticky black cloth tape on there to try to make the seal work.

Im sure it doesnt work any more...

I went to the other side of the engine and pulled off the other one ( that doesnt have the vacuum line to it) and the rubber seal was very tight like it should be..

It would be AWESOME if its something this silly!!

I'm not familiar with that carb but torn or worn out rubber diaphragms can cause all sorts of problems. If there are any cover plates with screws, there might be one of those lurking underneath.

Most likely the idle circuit has some junk in it, if there is no intake/carb air leak. Clean it out or replace it. A Holley Projection throttle body system would be super on that car.

So cool, and think, once you get the idle fixed, you can actually use that A/C unit without overheating the car.
