Mercedes "Jeep" ?

The kid and I were in the 123 today, buzzing down the road between Prescott and I 17, talking about Jeeps. I seemed to remember that I'd seen a jeep like Benz, configured very much like a real Jeep with 2 doors, a soft top, etc. He thinks maybe I'd seen a 2 door GWagen, or was confusing a Land Rover.
Any help here? If such a beast exists, was it ever imported?

Bingo, that's the one I was thinking of. This one was ended by the seller at bids of 16K on ebay. I wonder what it sold for?

Paging Mike, paging Mike.

Not only were they imported, they were imported into your neck of the woods. The sole US authorized importer for G-Wagons for many years was Europa in Santa Fe.

Hang on I just got home

They were imported for a very long time and the older W460s (1979-1991) were the most Jeep like with different body styles and a stripped down interior as seen here.

They can be found these days for relatively reasonable prices.

The W463s (1991-Current) have much more luxury appointments to the drivetrain and interior. They are also a lot more expensive the the old W460s. Later W463 cabrios have a powered soft top.

Buyer beware though. A lot of sellers tend to overvalue them making the case that they are very rare or celebrity owned etc etc. Do your homework and don't be fooled as most Grey market Gs are often very overpriced. Here is a case in point.

What a great day test driving old Mercedes

Would it be better to find a pre-1986 example in another country and just have it privately brought in? (No idiotic regulations for cars that are 25+ years old.)

Yes, and it's done fairly frequently.

Yeah I found a surplus MG mount for my friends G but he didn't want to cut a hole in the roof, or spend $20k on the gun.

I wonder what the laws are in CT regarding transporting a machine gun on the roof of your G?

I want one of them roof ports, or one off a mog.
