My TDI said it was 108*F when I pulled up to the office a few minutes ago. The vents were blowing ice cold air  Amazing to think people used to live without cool.

Mixed blessing when you think about the actual costs and effects. However, Americans do seem to lead the rest of humanity when it comes to attempting climate control.

Actually, a lot of folks STILL live w/o cool...even in places were 100 degrees is the pre-dawn temp!

I'd agree... Flushing toilet is in there too...

I hardly ever use the AC at home or in the car; prefer the nice warm breeze. And thanks to global heating; crazy hot summers seems to be something of the past in Los Angeles.

Thank you , thank you, thank you, Mr. Carrier.

I'm looking forward to moving to cool and breezy SoCal in a few months. As for cold AC, you can't beat Duracool.

AlC is nice, but really this summer hasn't been to bad without it, so long as I drive north before 1 pm and drive south after 5, so that the sun is always on my passenger side or above me....Otherwise it gets pretty hot here driving in Phoenix without A/C.

Joseph_Conrad 07-22-2011 09:50 PM

Thank god for a/c or else more people would probably live here.

Nice to have in a car, but overrated. I don't have any working in my wimpy VW 1.6 daily drivers or 240D. Just gotta find a route that keeps the air flowing and the sun off you. The missus has to have it in her old cars or she won't play.:(

One's opinion of A/C obviously varies with your local weather and climate.
Our local electric company has a deal where, for permission to OCCASIONALLY remotely turn off your house A/C, they give a nice rebate on your bill. Over the past 5 years, I rarely noticed when they cycled us off. When they did, it was for an hour or so. Pretty good deal!
Until yesterday, with the temp ( not the stupid heat index, but real temp) hit 105, and they shut off about 1/2 a million homes' A/C. Mine was off for 4 hours. I came home from a day in the field, anticipating a relatively cool house. No comforting blast of cool air as I opened the door greeted me. Went out to eat to enjoy the cool; not the food.

Today is likely a repeat. May have to change my mind about that "deal".

I'm pretty damned grateful for it, too. Anybody remember that movie Mosquito Coast that starred Harrison Ford? I was thinking about that last night as I stood in my garage, attempting to build the doors to go on the bottom of my new barbecue. I gave up when I realized I couldn't keep the sweat out of my eyes any longer.

According to the "2000 Year Old Man" the greatest inventions were Saran Wrap ("You can make a sandwich and it clings ... you can look right through it.") or Liquid Prell shampoo (compared to a heart lung machine, if you drop a Liquid Prell bottle, it doesn't break).
