Parking brake on my 03 dodge ram

My parking brake seems to be losing its effectiveness. The truck has 109K miles on the original rear brake pads and rotors. Is it a separate drum inside the rotor like a benz or does it work on the disc pads somehow?

I am wondering what I need to do to restore decent parking brake function....adjust it? new pads? or separate brake shoes need replacing?

It's my understanding that your truck has the separate set of shoes for the parking brake. On my truck, the PB is adjusted just like the drum brake systems on cars in the '60's and '70's, through an oblong hole in the backing plate. You just spin the star wheel until the slightest resistance is felt when turning the rotor.

Find out what brand pads and shoes were used for the replacements... I used to install monroe's (Marked as a premium line replacement) and 3 of 10 would have issued with the included shims contacting the rotors, making a high pitched squeek or possibly higher pitched grind at all speeds, more noticeable at low speeds. Solution was to reuse the old ones, or grind down the new ones.

Also, FWIW, the rear shoes on my neon were malformed when they were re-bonded, and light contacted the inside of the drum. Loud squeaking at all speeds, with no poor braking performance.

Must have been the result of the Teutonic influence at the time.
