Getting a new Diesel, Not a MB

Getting my first non-MB diesel this weekend. Shes coming via trailer on Saturday. She runs, but is a bit ugly.

Shes a 2001 Silverado 3500HD Duramax 4x4

My friend/mentor sold me this beast last weekend and we've been trying to figure out how to get it the 140 miles from his house to mine for the last week.

My friend is a mechanic, he owns his own shop and is the bus mechanic for the local school district. He's owned this truck since 2002, hes the second owner. His son was driving the truck when a woman turned right from a left turn lane crossing in front of the truck, and well you see the results. It could not have ended well for her car.

Mechanically the truck is awesome, 230k on her, but shes not showing her age. The Duramax has been well maintained with new injectors, IP inspected/rebuilt, heads inspected/rebuilt about 40k ago when he had the heads off for new head gaskets. Despite its sorry looking state it starts right up and sounds awesome. My friend used this truck mainly for highway driving, taking his family on trips, and hauling cars cross country. This is why the mileage is high but the truck is in good shape. The interior I'd give an 8 outta 10. Comes with the camper shell

I'm pretty excited about this new project. I finished my kitchen remodel on Sunday, and wouldn't you know 1 week later another project is getting started. I'll post more pics once its in my driveway

If I was in the passing lane, and saw that coming up behind me, I would move over...to Nevada.

Nope, I've been waiting to see how the delivery goes. Adam, my friend/mentor, called and said he got it a ride with one of the local shops by him. seems they drive a truck with a trailer down to Sacramento to get parts every week or so. the trailer is normally empty going down to Sacramento... not this week, its gonna be full with a whole lot of Chevy. Once it gets here I'll take off the LH fender, hood and core support.

lol, I love a good pipe dream, and this has crossed my mind... But the honest answer is NO. I've been wanting a large truck for a while. Since I got my house really. The Dakota is all I need but I was raised with an F350 around at all times, and every now and then I do need a large truck, so I'm going to fix the Chevy and use her for all the ridiculous redneck things you need a large truck for. Plus, the SD is running the best its ever run, I don't wanna mess with it.

OK, I'll admit the front tire kicked a weight, and the tire rubs under heavy cornering with my fat rear end in the drivers seat... but I can deal with that stuff

230k and its had to have the head/head gasket/ip/injectors all replaced or rebuilt already? I think I'd be sticking with a MB diesel or put a cummins in there!

Nice truck! Unlike Mercedes parts are cheap and they don't need to many of them!

Dually's are a MF to park though, at least around here where everything is old and small.

Geez...

Have you not heard of "Preventative Maintenance"...? Parts are cheaper, and some people are a bit more proactive....

If you plan on doing any upgrades to the powertrain, this guy specializes in Duramax diesels -

http://www.kennedydiesel.com/

I'm running one of his twin centrifugal lift pump setups on the Jeep - because DC was too frakkin cheap to put a lift pump on it in the first place.
