I took a long cut yesterday
On my way home from Colombus Ohio and my lovely #1 daughter's family I intended to take us 40, which parallels the interstate to avoid a long backup which I had noticed on the way over due to construction. Unfortunately once I got on it it began to rain and obscured visibility and I missed a turn and ended up going north without realizing it until I noticed I was about to cross US 36 which I knew runs east and west.
Cursing myself I decided to take 36 back to indiana knowing that I had not been on that section of road before and not being in a hurry. So I am meandering along on 36 enjoying the sights to see and nursing the wipers on and off and after about a half hour I noticed I had not seen a 36 road marker for a while and found I had missed another turn and was heading north again. Drat! Looking at the map I saw that I was on 571 which eventually crossed 28 in Eastern INdiana so I decided to keep going on that. Well pretty soon I went through a little town and missed a turn and before too long I noticed I was now heading Southwest. Curses! After another ten mile detour I managed to cross 28 and after that it was all familiar territory and I managed to make it home without any further unneccesaary meanderings. I did have a great time though (The lovely Mrs. W was not with me as she has gone to visit her aged mom in Texas) running through small towns where I have never been and seeing sights. I saw a pair of great earthen dams (US 40 runs along the top of them) in Ohio north of Dayton. I could not figure out what the heck was going on because it clearly was a dam of some sort but there was no lake on either side. I just read up on them. They were built after the great Dayton flood of 1913. They only fill in case of flood. All other times the river just passes through a sort of metered orifice which allows it to flow freely except in case of a flood in which matter it will force water to back up and keep it from flooding Dayton again. This has the advantage of being very environmentally a very light touch on the natural landscape. I like it. I also noticed a 94 or so Buick Hearse which was built on a standard wheelbase station wagon but put a square end on it and extended the tail about a foot and squared it and put a side hinged door on it so a casket will just slide in. Intersting looking but not suitable for a towing device due to the extra long tail. I noticed some other interesting things too which I will try to write about tonight. (The four hour trip unfortunately turned into over six hours though).

Jeez, I hope you didn't have your turn signal on the whole trip.
I love getting "lost" and exploring areas I haven't been or haven't been to in a long time. I was in Dayton a couple years ago for a meeting and learned about those dams, very interesting concept and execution. That hearse sounds funky. I think we all need to chip in and get you a forum digital camera for all these cool vehicles and sites you come across! I'm looking forward to the rest of the story.

A great many SWM ( Storm Water Management) structures are now built using that same philosophy. It solves some other problems with "wet" ponds such as attractive nuisance ( swimming/ skating etc) and wet ponds can be a source of mosquito infestations. Dry ponds with a calibrated low flow orifice are becoming more popular.

One of the differences between my wife and I is that she is driven to get to the goal, and I enjoy the journey.
I believe you also are a " enjoy the journey" person. That doesn't mean you can't be goal-directed, but you can find enjoyment in the course of the journey.

I have an ALMOST impeccable sense of direction. Almost.
Some years ago we were camping in the mountains of western MD, far off the major roads. It was a cloudy, overcast day, so no help from sun. In all the twists and turns, I got thoroughly disoriented. So much so that even when we hit a road that clearly said we were going west, I doubted it. It took me several hours to regain any idea of direction. Really strange. All in all, it was still a nice drive.

My sense of direction and ability to tie distant points together absolutely BLOWS.
Fortunately, I'm married to a human GPS. Darling Wife can find anything, anywhere, and has well defined maps in her head of how various places relate to one another. Constantly amazed by her abilities. Which come in really handy, since we're both big time "I dunno, let's see what we find down this path" kinda folks. Love, love, love pointless wandering.

i usually have a good sense of direction if the sun is out.
I also passed some areas which looked like cold war military bases. One place had about 20 6 x 6 army trucks in a fenced area.

My mother when she was about 75 was coming back from Ft. Worth with her sister in the car.....and some accident had blocked off IH35 southbound ... they were routed out to the west to go around it...
FOUR HOURS later... they re entered IH 35 about ten miles further down the road...

Back when I use to drink, I would often get lost in my own house.
