Overweight Nutritionist

If you were recommended to see a nutritionist (doesn't matter the reason) and that person was overweight, (say 40 lbs) what would you think?

Joseph_Conrad 07-25-2011 12:46 PM

I would think they've probably just had too much nutrition. Doesn't mean they don't know what's best for a person.

Hypocrisy of the messenger doesn't necessarily mean the message is wrong.

I would listen to the advice and evaluate.

It reminds me of this saying . . . never judge a barber by his haircut.

I use myself as an example. I sell (nearly) everything to grow perfect grass. Lawn, golf, sportsturf. If it's a turfgrass, I can keep it green. Superintendents, lawn care operators, homeowners, park & rec guys call me for advice. I can get anything I want at cost, far less than anything a homeowner can buy at a big box store or cheap T&O outlet.

My lawn? Looks like $h!t. If not for the neighbors on either side that do absolutely nothing to their lawns but mow them, I'd have one of the crappier lawns on the street. OTOH, once my kids are old enough to takeover the mowing and trimming...

Just because a person is overweight does not mean they are unhealthy. My cholesterol and other fun tests show me to be perfectly fit and healthy. But I could look 40lbs easily. I ride mountain bike a lot, used to race, and eat well.

Oddly, the friends that I know are unhealthy are super thin and smoke. Go figure.

I often run out of Business Cards and I own a Print Shop. A friend of mine owns a Body shop amd his truck is four different colors.:confused::confused::D

A town has two barbers. Barber Fred has an immaculate haircut. Barber Joe has a haircut which appears to have been performed during a hurricane. Which barber should you patronize?

sounds like a classic "puzzler" from Car Talk . . . ;)

This isn't for me, it's in regards to a comment one of my client's once made.

However, shouldn't wise food choices=normal weight?

tbomachines 07-25-2011 03:53 PM

Here's my typical weight rant using myself as an example:

Overweight and fat/obese are two different things. I am technically obese according to the awful BMI "standards". Yet my body fat level is far below average. Why? Its because I lift, and lift hard. Functional strength is pretty awesome but makes you look like a giant barrel in your core and lower body. It has incredible benefits though--Saturday I lifted and dragged (sideways, not rolling it) a utility trailer loaded with furniture, and find ways to apply the training all the time whereas previously I'd resort to asking for help, getting a hand cart, etc. I still look normal enough to where people don't stare at me...only drawback is my ass and quads with pants, haven't really solved that one after several rips .

Even being classified as "obese" I do a 50 mile ride at 17-ish mph average every weekend, go to the gym 4 days a week doing squats, deadlifts, etc (no wimpy low weight high rep nonsense). If I didn't lift at this weight I'd be approaching landwhale mode. Personally I'd probably look for another nutritionist if it was 40+ lbs of unhealthy sloppy looking fat--and that's being totally honest. To me that's like a mechanic driving a car without ever changing the oil. 40lbs of muscle with a reasonable fat content is a totally different story.

Ahhh. And it's not in regards to a "nutritionist" either, is it?:D

Theory and practice are entirely different. Making wise food choices = normal weight. Knowing what wise food choices are but making unwise food choices doesn't = normal weight. I know very well what foods and beverages are bad for me, yet I still choose to eat and drink them. As a result, I'm a fat arse. That doesn't mean that my knowledge of what is wise vs. unwise is any less.

However, in business, perception is reality. While the nutritionist probably knows every bit as much as a fit one, his "abnormal" weight is going to be a liability due to that perception.

Would you use a realtor who lives in rented accommodation ?

Buy oil from a store that has no oil well?

Sun Screen from a basement department?

........the list goes on......:)

Some of the most unhealthy folks I've worked with while doing a stint at a local hospital was the care staff!

And the middle school football coaches I've seen look as if they swallowed a few of the players!

I lift every other day, a run 5x/week. All functional. Will start yoga soon as well. I'm overweight (66th percentile) according to BMI (CDC-WHO).

This nutrionist isn't fit, she's a load. I'm tempted not to refer...
