It wasn't fully implemented and I prefer not to play politics with our country's finances.

Clinton was the last President to have a balanced budget, Bush was horrible, and Obama is slightly better, so far. His term isn't up yet.

Clinton was dragged, asphalt under his fingernails, to a balanced budget by a (drumroll) recalcitrant Republican Congress.

Does this give the repos any particular virtue?

Of course not!

Republicans have amply demonstrated that when they have power in an undivided congress they like to spend the taxpayer's money like a drunken Democrat.

Divided government looks like hell but it is better for the taxpayer than having either party controlling everything.

Thank you, divided gov.

We have not tallied up all costs of the 'long term' care of the returning Veterans yet from the unnecessary wars. It will be very looong term and expensive.

How about telling them: "sorry, we screwed up. If you want money, go serve as a merc in Central America. SCRAM, boy!"

Sometimes, you just gotta take a hard line.

Not true. A major focus of Clinton's presidency was balancing the budget.

Every adminstration since Andrew Jackson shares the blame for the debt. I blame the Whigs the most, though. They could have fixed Van Buren's spendthrift ways, but chose to set the country on a course to ruin.

If the Republicans and Democrats would just agree that it's the Whigs fault, then this would all be over...

Absolutely true. Go back and read it. Clinton and the Repos argued so strenuously that they shut down the gov. Through negotiations they reached a balanced accommodation.

Hope we can do that again, without the silly shut-down thingie.

We should remember that the republican party of today isnt the same republican party of the 90s, we now have a heavy tea party influence.

From everything I've read/seen today republican party is the party of our way or the highway.

Along the lines of the title of this thread......
There are reports that President Obama is secretly telling the banks and his Wall Street friends that there will not be a default. At the same time, for purely political purposes, he, and the democrat leadership keeps telling us there is an Aug 2 DEADLINE.
Obviously, that deadline is no true deadline; it will be moved as necessary. And moved again, if the political winds so dictate.
Also, left unsaid in all this CUT debate, is that they are still talking cuts versus the built-in 7% annual increase'
Theater, bread, circuses.

Somebody's got to pay for all these wars.
Who do you think its gonna be?

I think the total is up to about 7 to 10 grand per person now.

If I was given a choice, I would rather have paid for healthcare than war.

But I was not given that choice, and was forced to pay for war.

Which would you choose to pay for.

A doctor to take that stray bullet out of you,
or a soldier to put one in you ?

How do you get from "There are reports..." to "Obviously..."? Apparently you have decided that these "reports" are accurate and complete.

As for whether there will be a "default," it seems clear to me that there will be a default on many of our obligations, unless (a) the debt ceiling is raised or (b) Obama exercises his power under the Constitution to pay bills regardless of the debt limit. We might avoid default on our interest payments, social security, and military pay, but after that there are all sorts of obligations the country has already taken on that will go unpaid. We will be a country of deadbeats.

The United States is already a country of deadbeats and has been for 50 years.
