Kid dies after running out in road...mom charged with his death.
http://www.cnn.com/2011/CRIME/07/26/georgia.mother.sentencing/
I'd like to hear your comments first, but I do have something interesting to say about this tragedy . |

Negligence is just that. I think her getting charged was a little harsh considering what happened, she essentially already paid for it.

I think it's a bit harsh myself. Kids can sneak away from even the best parents.

Lawyers don't believe in accidents. Its always someone's fault.

I can't believe she was charged in the first place. I don't believe the mother did anything wrong. At least based on what little was presented in the article. Sometimes kids just don't listen. Kids die from accidents everyday.
Its hard to judge the driver. The driver did leave the scene. We don't know weather the driver was DUI or not. We don't know the mood of the crowd. THere was a simular case up in Indy. A driver hit a pregnant woman. Called 911 and then fled. They did catch him latter. He said the crowd was getting ugly and he feared for his life. One of that crowd, said he wouldn't have hurt him etc. Still, I could not blame the driver for leaving the scene. I could see the defence of not incieting a riot. Tom |

She was just given probation with the option of a new trial.

Does the prostitutor (misspelling intentional) in that county have no heart? "She just got probation" isn't an excuse for adding insult to injury -- she already saw her child die in front of her.

Children need to be kept on leashes. That's just all there is to it . . .

No, overzealous appointed officials do. Preferably a leash made out of hemp with a slipknot on one end.

Well, here's my take on all this : I think the state, the Fed's and school authorities are to blame.
In Europe, the rule is: The school bus must pull away after dropping off the kids before the kids can cross so they have a clear view...... they then exercise the rules they have been taught in school to cross the road. I have watched in horror as kids leave the bus in the USA and run right out across the road to the other side without a look of caution or even the briefest glance to see if vehicles are coming. I couldn't possible do that...I fear for myself colliding with a vehicle too much to even risk it....I would have to peer around the bus before I could cross over. This lack of a basic safety element is why I think American school kids have such a disregard for their safety in the road. They have never learned to fear traffic...you see it all the time as they saunter across the local main drag through town and deify the cars by walking slower. So this kid is a casualty of a system that fails the kids in basic road safety. I was always taught to look both ways and then once more before crossing the road. To this end I place the blame upon the authorities for failure to instil this basic safety procedure into the kids that both ride the bus or walk to school. I know this child was 4 years old, but here I see kids dropped off at pre school running out into the road after mom has opened the door. As for the mothers culpability, I think the authorities where out of order taking this action as there is no way to totally control events.....and I'm damn sure she would have prevented this event had she been able. I don't see parents prosecuted for letting little 3 year old Johnny/Mary etc... ride his three wheeler into the road from the drive and get killed by a passing car. |

Don't prosecutors have enough to do with real crime? This woman will never stop paying. I believe the legal punishment is cruelty defined and unconstitutional. Judge should have suspended the sentence.

From the article I don't think it was a school bus.
Kids will be kids, you do all you can, but kids will be kids. Unfortunately Lawyers (Prostituters ) will be Lawyers and their dictionary has the word accident removed. I think the driver of the car got a stiff sentence, yes he left the scene, but think how he has to feel knowing he killed the kid. Even if it was an accident.

The parent was guilty of breaking a law while acting as the parent of child who then also broke the law. WTF are people thinking when they defend this woman? Is it okay to shoplift in a store with your kids and they know you are stealing? Teaching your kids it's okay to cross the street anywhere got this kid killed. If you don't like the law then do what's in you power to get the law changed. I certainly hope people will look at this and change the way they think, act and look out for themselves and the children that must then live in society where we all pay if the kid ends up doing stupid things.
