Aston Martin Cygnet: Poll and opinions

Basically it's a Toyota iQ with a few badges glued on and a different interior. Personally I think it's a joke and i'm predicting that it will be a complete flop. Just wondering if there is anyone out there who would buy it and why.

They'll probably sell one for a Euro with purchase of any other model of Aston. The purpose of that car is not to be an Aston, but to get around the EU equivalent of CAFE regulations.

Makes me sicck...

But would anyone believe you ;)

If I had oodles of moolah I'd buy them as party favors for folks at one of my shindigs.

davidmash 07-26-2011 06:56 PM

I suspect it will be bought by the same type of people who bought Lincoln Blackwoods.

Aston Martin doesn't have any choice. Europe has adopted the same CAFE strategy as the US. Instead of measuring MPG they look at CO2. The crucial difference is that manufacturers can't buy their way out of it like the US. If they can't meet the corporate average CO2 (120g/KM), they're not allowed to sell any cars in the EU. Ferrari and Porsche can get away with it because they are part of much larger conglomerates (VW and Fiat). AM has been screwed ever since Ford sold them.

Also keep in mind that MB has never turned a profit on its Smart division yet they keep funding a loosing venture for the exact same reason.

I thought you could only buy one if you were a owner of a regular Austin Martin.

Was yesterday in Beverly Hills for work; besides all the Ferrari's, several RR Ghosts etc. saw two new Austin Martin Rapids come by: what a stunning looking car, just amazing.

The sheet metal is a lot better looking that the Scion.

Hatterasguy 07-26-2011 07:50 PM

If they price it like a Scion it will probably sell well, maybe worth $5k more for the nice interior.

As a Toyota its probably pretty good. As an Austin they just need the badge on the hood to meet the fleet efficiency requirements.

I suspect they will be selling them pretty cheap, 30k euros is a pipe dream.

I voted with "know someone who would" option. There's a girl who works in the office upstairs who drives an Escalade. I could see her buying one of these if they sell them in the U.S.

Fulcrum525 07-26-2011 10:02 PM

I just don't understand why Aston didn't seek out a more suitable platform to modify into an Aston. There are plenty of small and efficient sports car out there that would have fit the bill.

(Mazda MX-5, various Lotus Models etc etc.)

Aquaticedge 07-26-2011 10:19 PM

It's a interesting lookin car. but my Big fat body wouldnt fit in there too well I dont think.
