When I was growing up in Bennington Vermont my grandfather delivered the mail. He didn't get paid for it either, it was voluntary. He only did it one day a week. Other people volunteered too.
That was a rural route.

I get things shipped to me once a month or so. Last time I thought to try USPS to see if they could do better. They did not do better, they lost my package.
After 2 weks I give them a call. They tell me I would get a status call within 2 days. 3 days later I give them another call. Told to wait another 2 days for a call. 3 days later I call them again. This time they fess up and admit they lost my package. Then they ask "Did you have insurance?" No I say, "Sorry there's nothing we can do to help you." What about my postage? I paid you to deliver the package and you failed, I want my postage back. "Sorry we don't refund postage."
$65 down the drain.
USPS = EPIC FAIL!!

I will never use them again.

The wife gets small packages in the mail about twice a week, we noticed that several of them came in broke, so the wife stayed home one day and watched the mail lady pull into our driveway and throw the packages out of her window onto the concrete driveway, we reported her and the post office did nothing. So now we pick up our packages from the post office.

Well as far as paying bills, anyone who buys into online bill payments better NOT have one of the banks that are still gaming the system ---Choosing which payment to make first instead of the order they need to be---So they can hit you with a late payment debit card charge.

Because..... The reforms that were made to the "system" to protect consumers ---DO NOT COVER AUTOPAYMENT ACCOUNTS--NOTHING HAS CHANGED.

We send (on average) 10,000 parcel packages a year. We did USPS, UPS, FedEx, USPS for a second time and ended up with UPS again. Every change, except the poor decision to switch to FedEx, was service related rather than financial. For a resident sending or receiving a letter/package or two a month, USPS is probably fine. But the cumulative effect makes the choice more clear. If everything else was equal, and it's not, UPS would still win hands-down for step-by-step tracking and claim service on the rare occasion something occurs.

The issue with FedEx comes down to the fact that all of the standard delivery guys driving around in the UPS truck-like FedEx trucks are independent contractors so corporate has no real control over them. It all comes down to the personal responsibility of the route driver. The FedEx guy who delivers to us is excellent, knows when we like to receive our shipments, but you never know about the guy on the other end. He could just be going through the motions.

The other strange thing with FedEx, at least as of a few years ago when we were with them, is that each branch is a separate entity. FedEx Ground was separate from FedEx Expedited (Next Day, 2 Day) was separate from FedEx Freight and you had to have separate accounts for each and they were picked up by different trucks.

Yes I mentioned that in CLK's thread about possible buisness ventures-- Fed-ex is the most disfunctional outfit in the buiz--and still is after figuring our which one of the 6 branches you are dealing with, I DONT. And hate it when winning something on ebay and the seller insists on using them. last time was last week, the truck dropped off a spensive 30's car heater when I wasn't home. The time before that was 3 yrs ago when i attempted a hold for pick-up. Went to the fed-ex at DFW international--"oh thats not us--thats the other fed-ex" had to go to another one across the freeway--Again "not us --a different one" ended up having to drive to Dallas and search twice again before finding whichever branch it was hub

Now that we can have our junk mail delivered electronically, we really don't need the post office . . .

I think it is just hard to judge such a large outfit by one example.

For instance, I once lived in a town with about 100 people. We were spread out over a 64 square mile area since everyone lived on quite a bit of land. One Christmas morning we received a phone call from the Post Master saying we had an important letter and I had to has her when the PO started staying open on Christmas?

It turns out she was just taking advantage of the place being closed to sort some mail and saw a Registered Letter for me and thought I might want to come get it.

So, judging by that one example, I would say the PO gives fantastic service. But everyone knows that would be the exception and I think that is the real problem the USPS has: Uneven service. Some is wonderful and some stinks.

I would call this a management problem. Not that I am qualified to fix it or anything, but a big shakeup from the top down appears to be needed for any real change to take place. After that changes from the bottom up until the service is even, and excellent, everywhere.

Perhaps the USPS should spend some money on a good Management Consultant? I don't think the problem is the Union they have since other places have Unions and don't have this type of trouble, but there seems to be some rule changes somewhere that need to take place.

Agreed.

Fedex freight has overcharged me by a factor of 1.5, dropped a finished piece off the truck and damaged it..........refusing to acknowledge the damage...........and destroyed another finished box...........also refusing to acknowledge the claim.

Needless to say, they haven't been paid for any of these shipments and they have given my account to a collection agency. I'll be very pleased to tell my story to a judge. They will never be paid.

Thumbs up Post office

I love our small, local post office. I help manage a not-for-profit in Boston and live in Florida so I use them a lot and have always had great service.

I also have friends and family overseas and am still amazed how quick and inexpensive it is to mail them with the USPS.

Just my my 2¢.

Well generally I give the USPS an OK to Good marks, never had any really issue's, never had anything lost, delivery times OK.
But I would hope for better.

Things like one of our delivery men will put the mail in the mailbox and packages at the front door. Huh put it all at the door, the young guy does that.

Then speaking of closings, wife went to the PO the other day it's closed, she couldn't find where they moved it.

BUT !!! we got the notice TODAY that they moved as of 6/27, says something right there.

For $0.44 . . . a person comes to your house . . . six days a week . . . picks up the letter . . . delivers it anywhere in the US, including AK and HI, and US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, Marshall Islands, Federated Micronesia, and the Northern Marianas. Such a deal.
