So is this a real Porsche?

The petrol powered versions are MONSTERS! Tons of HP and usually more torque. I never saw the point of making or having one, but wow they're fast!

Joseph_Conrad 07-29-2011 12:58 AM

Looks like it...I like the panamera better...comes in diesel too...and hybrid.

Skippy 07-29-2011 01:33 AM

I don't get the Cayenne, or the BMW X-series for that matter. If you want a Porsche or BMW, get a real one. If you want an SUV, get a real one (CJ, XJ, YJ, etc.)

t walgamuth 07-29-2011 04:32 AM

I don't get then either, but with a diesel might snag me if I were in the market for such a device, which I am not.;)

Diesel4me 07-29-2011 07:21 AM

Yeah it's a Porsche just like those old tractors were Porsches.;) If Porsche made an electric toothbrush or computers I would say "Yep, it's a Porsche."

Xlimodriver 07-29-2011 07:52 AM

I had a real Porsche 20 years ago, 2.7 L. air cooled 6 cylinder with a whale tail.

Not with a top speed of 220 km/h and a 0-60 time of 7.2 seconds, it isn't. Geez...my 210 wagon should come fairly close to that 0-60, and could top out at a higher speed. How embarassing would that be for a Porsche owner?

Mike D 07-29-2011 08:25 AM

It's about as much a "real" Porsche as a Jaguar with a 350 c.i. Chebby motor is a "real" Jaguar, oh wait....:D

Is it tricky to heel-and-toe with blocks on the pedals?

iwrock 07-29-2011 11:32 AM

Yes.

Drive one. The Cayenne Turbo is a beast in the hills.

KarTek 07-29-2011 12:37 PM

I'm thinking they should leave the diesels to VW...

Hatterasguy 07-29-2011 12:45 PM

They are very nice cars, you have to drive one.

That's my son who's 25 now.

I have heard that in Europe diesels are much more developed and advanced, and they have much higher performance diesel engines than we do. A mechanic at a shop near my office was telling me recently that this is true, but they require much more highly-refined fuel than what we have in the US. I wasn't aware of this.

Does anybody here know whether this is true or not?

Try paying $8 or $9 per gallon and you might reconsider.

They have much lower emissions standards in Europe which is generally why you see more diesels over therethan here. Take for example all the urea injection emissions systems, they were only developed in production the last few years to keep up with emissions.

To my understanding, they are not nesscesarily lower, just different. The Euro standards require a lower CO2, while the US emmisions require a lower NOx. Before the lower emmissions Euro desiels could be imported, the ULSD needed to have the infrasture. I am not sure if the present Euro deisel is any different than the US.

Good point - I don't know that they're lower but that they are quite different. Since Europe is traditionally a much stronger diesel market they mainly develop the diesels for those standards.

Skippy 07-29-2011 10:14 PM

I've heard Euro diesel tends to run around 55 cetane. U.S. spec is 40.

Notwithstanding what I said earlier, I kind of dig that Porsche not-quite-a-VW-Thing thing. They should have called it the Jagermeister.

It would be nice to have a little more power, though. It bothers me more the fact that it is a German Escalade, doesn't sit well with me. Either it's a Porsche, or it's a VW. It can't be both. Of course, maybe that doesn't rest well for the 914 crowd, now that I think about it. Which is a wonderful car. Still, I hate SUV's.

I've heard it said that a 911 is a VW Beetle with a spoiler. I wouldn't say that around my boss though. He's a big-time air-cooled Porsche guy. I wasn't a particular Porsche fan before I started working for him, but I've decided I'm rather fond of pretty much all 911's. I'm not as impressed with 914's. I haven't had the opportunity to drive a 912, 356, 928, or 944 yet, so I'm still officially undecided on those.

I only hate poseur SUV's. Real ones don't bother me at all, in fact I used to have one: '88 Suzuki Samurai, 2" shackle lift and 29" tires, no carpet, no radio, 2" exhaust, 25 mpg and would go anywhere a Humvee would and quite a few places where a Hummer couldn't go. It also topped out at 60 on level ground and burned a quart of oil every 200 miles.

I like the 914s personally, but only with a turbo subie boxer engine .

elchivito 07-30-2011 09:29 AM

Isn't that the same motor that's in the VW and Audi versions?
