Post Office closings..

The USPS has come up with a list of 3,700 Post Offices they say they need to close. I found a link to a list at the abcnews.com site but I am too ignorant in interwebie stuff to post the link here. It is not hard to find though, so maybe someone can find it and post it.

I read over the list for Oklahoma and I must say that I knew where a lot of them were. I was also shocked to see that they had a Post Office at all. About 99% of the ones being closed in Oklahoma are in towns that were once oil boom towns but the oil ran out in the 50's and the towns have been shutting down ever since.

In other words: I didn't see a single PO listed that looked like it needed to be open since almost no one lives in the area.

Now.... Can anyone think of a good use for an old Post Office building?

Here's the link to the affected sites by state: http://about.usps.com/news/electronic-press-kits/expandedaccess/statelist.htm

Personally, I cannot think of a single post office anywhere that needs to be open. The USPS is a joke, I say let UPS, FedEx and DHL do it.

Like buggy whips, they've outlived their usefulness.

Question is, can the fire the people who worked in those offices or are they just shuffled around?

Wrong:
There are places that the USPS delivers to that private courier services don't. Secondly, USPS service has been BETTER from my experience than any of the big three private courier services -- last FedEx delivery I got required a signature. Nooooo, the building super couldn't sign for it since the super's office is in the same building, but technically a different street address. So it got sent back to some office in the frickin' Bronx, where I either had to pick it up, wait 2 days for it to make it back to my local FedEx location, or spend a day at home off from work waiting for the FedEx putz to deliver.

Epic. Fail. I've never had such problems with USPS.

Holy crapola, they are really closing that many?? The PA list is a mile long! Most of those are tiny coal towns or industrial towns in the middle of nowhere, they'll probably have to resort to rural routes now...

Obviously, you don't live on a rural route.

A while back, our letter carrier honked and waved at me as she left my mailbox. 10min later, I check the mail box and guess what? A pink delivery attempt slip! For Gawd's sake, she saw me and honked and waved...I would have come over to her if she'd motioned or something. It is a 30 mile round trip to the post office for me to accommodate her laziness.

It's endemic. Everyone along this route has tale after tale of misdelivered mail. I even complained to the local postmaster...his response? "Well, there's no training Liz."

One sure thing: I never fail to get a call from the UPS man when he's dropping something off.

To coin a phrase: USPS customer service...epic. Fail. Let em die.

FedEx only requires a signature when the shipper requests (and pays for) it. Shipper fail.

That has not been my experience. Over the years, I've lived on a rural route, in the suburbs, in town, and now in a somewhat rural suburban area. I have always received great service from USPS. I guess their business model is a bit shakey, but for 44 cents, they will deliver a letter anywhere in the country, quickly and with extremely high reliability. That's the best bargain out there. 44 cents!

I agree, but the truth is any organization of that size will have good areas and bad areas. I've had nothing but good service from them as well.

Well thats pretty pathetic...USPS mailmen/women get paid a good salary....so good in fact I was seriously considering becoming a mailman last year and bumping up my income a bit. Decided against it but it still wouldn't be a bad job IMO. You'd think people would be lining up to do it.

Wow, 19 closing in the District of Columbia! Of course, I noticed a bunch of those appear to be in government office buildings. So, now they'll have to actually walk outside and down to the corner to mail stuff . . .
