That stuff is NAAAAAAAASTY!!!

I "accidently" sprayed a birch tree with the stuff. The tree died within the month and the following spring, I was able to push it over with my hands!

It takes about a week to tear up the weeds/grass but when it's done, you take a simple hard-tined lawn rake and scrape the surface clean of grass/weeks and even woody bushes and the like. Clean earth.

If I remember correctly, it mixes 2oz/gallon of water. I also squirt in a little DAWN dishwashing liquid...helps make the mixture "wetter" and soil, if too dry, will suck up the mixture better...thereby, getting to the roots quicker that way...

WEED ON!!!
Crossbow is simply triclopyr (Remedy), a woody plant herbicide combined with 2,4-D ester, a broadleaf post emergent herbicide.

Crossbow is too big a gun for domestic weed control...glyphosate is more cost effective.

Remedy is the cat's pyjamas when it comes to woody plant control. That's why your birch tree died so fast after spraying it.

We use Remedy for controlling huisache (black locust) and mesquite. 1:3 mix with diesel or cooking oil, spray around the stem of the plant about 6" above ground. Doesn't take much...and at $88/gal we try not to use much.

Huisache dies in a week, regardless of the size of the tree. Mesquite takes about 2 wks before the results are noticeable. It still kills them dead.

You can also mix it with water and spray on pastures to control dewberries, volunteer oak and elm seedlings, etc.

I believe it's name was "Triox" or something similar. There's a reason why you can't buy it. That shizzle was NASTY! It was a "sterilizer" and it never seemed to break down. It would enter the water table and accumulate in ponds. Kills everything indiscriminately, weeds, trees, pets, fowl, wild life, you name it.

Ace Hardware used to carry it. I used it in gravel driveways until I saw what it did. Sure did kill that crap dead though.

Here you go. I found a link to it. It was made by "Ortho".

The primary ingredient in the original Triox product by Ortho was Arsenic Trioxide, a soil sterilant, which IIRC has been banned. And, yes, it was super nasty stuff. It would kill everything.....grass, weeds, woody plants, brush, dogs, horses......!

I was in the chemical business and sold a comparable product.

I always wondered how Roundup works. I know it gets into the plant and moves to the roots. All we were ever told is that it kills the roots and the plant starves.

Last year I was told that yes it does all of these things but that there's a bit more to it. Roundup kills the plant but it also kills the micro biology around the roots. This stops the caton exchange and the plant is no longer able to get any nutrients. I was also told that repeated use of Roundup will effectively kill the good things in your soil.

Ever notice how much of a boost you get after applying manure to your fields or garden? Some of that is from the extra nitrogen but most of it comes from inoculating the soil with all sorts of little critters that break down elements into the basic things plants need to grow. Think of it like eating yogurt with added things to boost the healthy bacteria in your intestinal tract. If you were to somehow kill all of that good stuff inside you sickness would follow, if you even survived. Roundup works in a similar fashion.

I now use a plant food inoculated with soil bacteria ( 10 lt to 15 acres ) to get the soil healthy again. The results have been amazing.
