How about a few smoke bombs down their holes? Home Depot's got them.

Not really using them, just making my own out of 3 gallon pails. Still could be a problem here , but by the time the plants get big enough to suck up much moisture, temps will cool down ( I hope)

Army, could you just send some of that cold Dutch rain down here to Central Indiana, just tell it to go 155 miles southeast of Chicago, that is easy to find. We were so wet this spring, I thought they might start digging some canals, (they have already put up a lot of big windmills), then after the week of the big race, no rain - just day after endless day of super hot 90 plus and high humidity.

The weather is messed up... we had a very dry spring. Still it is what it is.
We did have some pretty good strawberries at the beginning of June and I suppose the wife is happy the garden hasn't gone to that yellow summer phase yet - but like I say spring was so dry the gooseberries were like shrivelled nuts... (@Rick - blood is easy but those CSI TV shows have got me worried about DNA - any tips from the master?)

Do you take care to seperate the males from the females to get the best tomatoes?

Question: What is the difference between a male and a female tomato? Is there such a thing as a tomato gender? Answer: My grandmother used to swear she could tell a male from a female tomato, thinking one is more sweet and with more or less seeds. Well, she was partially right. Truth be told, there's no such thing as a boy or girl tomato. Tomatoes are botanically perfect, meaning they can self-pollinate. However, a large scar on the blossom end can indicate less seeds, but this is simply due to retarded development of the fruit under less than desirable conditions. Size has nothing to do with sweetness or seed content.
