Our "96" 2.5L is at 215K The heads have been off due to gaskets.
I'm counting on 250K but hoping for 300K+ |

I've been considering a new WRX but the price tag is put-offish, along with early reliability concerns

I'm thinking about one for college for the kid, but all the ones I've looked at in his price range seem to be pretty high mileage and right up against needing a timing belt. When I price the parts, I can understand why. All the 1999-2002 subies around here are at 175K or more and are for sale for way over book. You sure can't say Subaru drivers stay home a lot.

If you are buying an older one, definately investigate the head gaskets as stated earlier.
A well maintained 2.5L should last well past 200k. I had both the 2.2 and the 2.5. I liked my 2.2 WAY BETTER than the 2.5. 2.2 is a much peppier engine. I got rid of mine when it started rotting away. I think it had 260,000+ on it and it still ran great.
