Sony PLAYSTATION 2 question

Hello, I was wondering if anybody can answer me a question regarding PS2. I am thinking of purchasing one and would like to know beforehand if it can play music CD that I record in my computer (NOT MP3, just regular music CD that i have made in my computer and can play in my car stereo).
I actually bought an XBOX today and took it back because when I brought it home and tried to play my music CD that i made in my computer it would not play them. It did play the CD that i have purchased at the stores though.
This info is very important for me because I have an extensive collection of homemade CD that I record in my computer and would like to play them in my living room using the PS2.
Thanks for any answer.

PE - why do you want to play games when you have that Chevelle SS? Wish I had one :)

Of course the X Box won't play burned CD's. Gates has always waged a personal battle against copying intellectual property.

X Box won't let you use the DVD portion of it until you buy the additional remote accessory either (which is unavailable presently). It looks like a good system but I just don't want to be at the mercy of Microsoft for my video games as well as my computer.

Get the PS2. And also get GTA 3 (Grand Theft Auto 3). Be warned though, this game is not for the faint of heart, but oh man is it fun.

Jim, I am too old to burn tires on the Chevelle (just kiding). Can't drive it much since it makes 6 MPG on Premium Unleaded. 468 cubes you see...

"That guy" you are so right, you read my mind. There are two reasons I took the XBOX back. First because as I mentioned, it does not play burned CD. I do not have space to put a second CD player on my entertainment center so I need a console that can serve both purposes. Secondly because as I was driving all the way home I could not stop thinking that I gave money to this filthy company named Microsoft. I mean I do not even run their operating systems in my computer. I use LINUX, let alone buying a console from them.

It seems that I am going to get a PS2 and hope that all the hoopla I ve heard about it is true. The only think that concerns me is that PS2 is already more than a year old and I would hate to find out that a few months after I buy it its succesor comes out. I have not heard anything like that yet though.

Reasons I have for anyone who is interested in gaming consoles...

1. X-box - Only 15-20 games out, controller for some of the games is horrible (I.E. Halo). I played with it at comdex, and found the controller uncomfortable to use, and be able to play it.

2. Game Cube - Very cool, small, games are cool, control is comfortable and very functional. Doesn't play DVD's or burned CD's as it uses 3" CD's. Plays nice and I enjoyed it. I would go for game cube over x-box if all I wanted was to play games.

3. PS2 - Graphics are still great, tons of games, accessories,a nd controllers are functional and comfortable. Gameplay is great, and the ps2 does everything it needs to.

I feel game cube is a good contender as it has some great games out for it, its small, easily portable if you want to tote it with you, and the gameplay is smooth and entertaining.

overall the PS2 is still the best. you cannot go wrong with buying one, and even the ps1 was ahead of its time compared to the other consoles that were out during that time. Ps2 to me is the best console system for gaming.

Personally I play my games on a pc, but thats only because as long as it can, I'd rather use it versus a console. I have some great controlelrs for games for my pc, and usuallys tick to racing/flight games anyway. Though I do enjoy the 1st person shooters as always.

Plus you can't beat a pc for multiplayer online gaming over the internet. x-box requires you to have a high speed connection. Not sur eon PS2/Game cube, but I do know you wont be playing online with the xbox unless you have a high speed internet connection. There is no dialup modem for the x-box, and the games are too intensive for playability over a slow line.

Dan, I will keep the GT 3 in mind. Good thing I do not have kids. I am a bachelor (that is why I can still have a Chevelle and soon a PS2) :)

Alon, thanks your input is always appreciated. I originally bought the XBOX based on the fact that it slaughters the other consoles in specifications (at least in theory). Take a look at this: http://www.tomshardware.com/consumer/01q4/011204/console-03.html So I thought, that based on these specs the graphics had to be better than the PS2. Now I have not seen PS2 graphics but I was not impressed with the XBOX graphics. I bought the game Halo together with the XBOX and played it for two days. The graphics were good (although they are still a joke compared to the ones I get from my 19" SONY PC monitor) but hey I was not expecting a TV to have the resolution of a professional PC monitor. They were good for TV though but NOT great. I do not know how the graphics for the PS2 are, I have not seen one.
I also agree with you with regards to the huge remote controller. It is uncomfortable especially for people with small hands like myself.
I like the Gamecube too, but there are not many games I like.

I came across a review of consoles in a British website and it shed some light as to why the XBOX does not offer better graphics than the PS2 despite the specs. The conclusion was that the increased specs of the XBOX become apparent only on huge HDTV screens. On these screens the XBOX's higher resolution capability (1920 x 1080) can shine versus the PS2's (640 x 480). On smaller TVs like my 27 incher both of the consoles are more than adequate and there can not be any difference.
Now I am not planning on getting an HDTV anytime soon since I am not a TV fanatic so I will not need the XBOX capabilities anyway.

I play GT3 all the time it's a rush. I have the Top end gt3 force feedback steering wheel and you actually will be yelling yahoooo.

engatwork 01-28-2002 06:41 AM

Keep in mind that is two different games ya'll are talking about GT3 and GTA3. GT3 is grand touring (racing game) and GTA3 is grand theft auto 3. After reading this I am going to have to pick up one of the GTA3 games and the steering wheel set up.

Here I am again, coming back to the original question of wether PS2 plays burned music CD. I was talking with a PS2 owner last night and he swore that the PS2 in a similar fashion to the XBOX does not play burned music CD. He said that in order for it to do so, one needs to buy a special chip and install it in the console.

Can somebody who owns a PS2 actually put a burned music CD inside and tell me if it does play them ? I would appreciate that.

engatwork 01-28-2002 01:14 PM

pe - I will try it tonite and let you know.

engatwork 01-28-2002 04:57 PM

pe - I just played a homemade "burned" CD on my PS2. You use the game controller to navigate between tracks. Absolutely no problem and no extra "chips". The track was from the Grateful Dead. You will enjoy the PS2.
There IS an optional wireless remote control that you can purchase separate to control the CD's but we try to keep a game in ours :).

Sony owns the rights to a lot of the music being copied illegally. Unless I'm misinformed, Sony devices that store music in a magic stick won't accpet mp3 format music.
