Job offer...Tesla Motors
I just received an unsolicited offer for a position with Tesla Motors. I spoke with them for over an hour this evening, and they have offered to fly me out for a one on one interview. The package they would offer includes a corporate move, including the purchase of my home here in PA, as well as a home to live in in Cali for 12 months.
I'm not looking for a job currently, as my current job's future looks fairly bright. I may, however, take the offer for the one on one so that I can see my step kids, who live in Cali. I'm going to have to give this some thought. Either way, I'm impressed that another company wants to hire me away from where I work now.

Probably won't be a "long term level" job but if you're interested into getting ahead of the game as far as technology is concerned and you're relatively financially secure (no major debts, no encumbrances where you are) then I say, "Go for it"!
The more I have on my resume', the more I earn/cost! Ya know what I'm saying? |

That's a charged opportunity. Are you current in your field and willing to switch? Does the new job spark your interest? Will it generate enough money? Alternatively, will you find it satisfying? They'll have a battery of questions at the interview. More power to you.

Before moving I'd go to www.mlslistings.com and look at the price of Real estate in the surrounding area. Will you working at the Fremont plant? If so you'd want to look at towns like Fremont, Milpitas. San Jose, Santa Clara, Campbell, Newark, San Leandro. Or commuting over the Sunol Grade you can look at homes in Livermore. If you going to be at their headquarters you'll want to look at Palo Alto, Los Altos, Mountain Veiw, Redwood City, Cupertino.

As far as being financially secure, I have zero debt, and both houses I own are free and clear. I've been from OH to UT to PA in the last three years. It depends on what the salary offer will be as to whether or not I accept. I turned down an offer last month for a job in Nogales, with housing in the US. It was for more than what I make now, but the area isn't as safe as I'd like.

Keep up the good work. Congrats! PS - Not that it matters one bit but in my world 'Electrical Energy Storage "Investigation"' would tend to fall into the chemical, material science, electrochemist, chemical engineering fields more so than electrical engineering. |

JP that is an AWESOME opportunity!!! Congrats! I would take it in a heartbeat but I know you (and many others on this forum) are in a different stage of life than me, so I'm not sure I can help much on advice. I do know Tesla has an innovative and bright financial future as they've been very good to their venturists. I see a Tesla around here very regularly and that car is absolutely incredible.

do your research on cost of living and what happens when you lose your house in 12 months. PA is a fraction of cost of living as Cali. They need to offer you 3X what you make in PA. My Co in FL is also looking for EEs with power experience. they are hard to come by and highly sought after. We have 10-15 positions we cant fill.
