I read a book a while ago called Aquariums of Pyongyang. The author spent quite a few years growing up in a prison camp in North Korea and later escaped to the south. It's a pretty interesting read.

Pyongyang, North Korea - Apr 1992. A fake Mercedes at the Industrial Exhibition Centre in Pyongyang. In the late 1980's North Korea imported hundreds of Mercedes, some for the local market others to be smuggled into China. They built a chassis on their own and used some original spare parts. Some 100 cars had been produced when I was there in 1992. They looked like Mercedes when parked, but their handling on the road gave them away.
