While checking out the Pick-n-Pull web site for specials I noticed they have added a 'help wanted' section. It looks like they have some real jobs requiring professional skills they are looking to fill.

I would be glad to do this if I were not a thousand years old, so I though there might be someone else here, someone a bit younger, that might want to know about this.

Check out the offshore oil field services industry. High pay, long hours. Dangerous. Advancement potential is very high. Fundamentally important to the nation.

You can start as a roustabout (unskilled labor) and work your way into a high paying skilled job in a few years. Literally work anywhere in the world. No kidding.

Any oil job in interesting. The only bad thing about them is the security of the job. When the price of oil drops so do jobs in the industry.

Right now there is a lot of whining about 'job killing regulations' which is rather overblown. Every oil company in the US is used to working with regulations and I have never seen a regulation that would stop a project that was viable.

I have seen low oil prices slam the door on a lot of oil businesses, though.

If you interested in doing this type of work, and like I said it is very interesting as well as well paying, then try to get on with a major or a mini-major. If you are in the oil field service business you will be the first to feel the pinch when there is a drop in oil prices.

And oil jobs are important to the nation. Many are still considered exempt from any military call-up since the jobs are 'vital to the national defense'.

When you see that in your job description you know you have an important job.

I worked for Pick N Pull for about a year. Not a good place to work, IMO.

Also a great opportunity to work with a bunch of ex-convicts who can't get employment anywhere else on a lump of steel in the middle of nowhere where lots of accidents happen...

I worked at a pick n pull back(junk yard) in JR college ,keyser westvirginia .it was great fun for a 19 year old boy .What I remember was hitchhiking to work -no problem ,(I was relatively clean),coming back at the end of my shift -not so easy to get a ride ,I was filthy.

All true. You feel the market forces, from roustabout to CEO.

I disagree with one thing: I'd go with a small company if I were young and adventurous. You get more experience and advance more quickly -- or out of a job sooner!

Young being under 30.

It's a hell of a ride.

Almost all of us did.

I was the last of the gandy-dancers, laid steel track with the Burlington Northern railroad when I was 18/19.

There was a small set of cars, three or four sleepers, 2 or 3 tool cars, a crane, a company store and a kitchen/dining room.

I made $4.18 an hour. I started out as a smart-ass kid outa high school. I finished up being able to look any man in the eye and say, out here, where it is just your abilities, I'm as good as you. Wouldn't trade it for anything.

I did go back to school though.
