G-wagen No Match for Outback
Six of Seven Suffer Rear Shock Failure
As MB Australia found out the hard way, no amount of planning can guarantee a successful journey, as six out of its seven G-Wagons have been crippled by broken rear shock absorbers seven days into the drive. The lone undamaged vehicle is actually a specially modified military-spec vehicle called the G-Professional that the German automaker is considering importing into Australia... might not be a bad idea, eh? |

Sounds like a bad batch of shocks if all of them had the same problem at once.

I agree with Hattie.
It sounds like the shock is actually blown out/broken. I have a feeling Bilstein (or whoever supplied it as OE) is going to be taking some heat for this. From experience, the stock shocks can take a beating... I have some experience in this area.... O_O

Didn't it say that the military-spec G did not have this problem? Wonder what the difference is shock absorber spec is.

The mil spec wagon probably has solid metal rods in place of shocks, and a real bouncy chair.

Sounds more like the PR endeavor was a success.... MB proved that the special military-spec vehicle was worth the cost over the common G-model. clever. |

The regular G costs $120k, it was a supplier issue.

Three spare wheel mounts also broke. An aftermarket UHF radio shorted and killed other fuses and one car's AC system went out.

More like the 6 that failed were designed for a less demanding terrain.
I have not read anything else on the matter, but it sounds like the only one that survived was a military-spec (pro) while the others were not. |

Didn't know that G-wagons were of-road vehicles, was under the impression they were build to get you safely from Beverly Hills to Malibu.

Interesting. I wonder why not the front shocks?

The answers to the above questions are this. Overloaded vehicles equipped with the wrong wheels, tires and air pressures.
The low profile tires and large rims on the stock Gs caused far too much pressure to be exerted on the shocks while driving over the rough terrain at high speed. The W461 that was with the team didn't have any of the issues that the civilian W463s had. Don't take my word for it....listen to someone who was there. http://www.pointedthree.com/disc/forums/showthread.php?tid=18495&start=21 Enjoy (4:20 is a good point to skip too) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9UNFgMXSYQ
