When judging this situation, one needs to understand the environment. The UK is not the same as the US. In this case, a known criminal with a loaded gun on his person, in a country where it's illegal period to own a gun, is a danger to everyone. He obtained the gun illegally and had he used it, everyone would be defenseless against his action. Even the regular street police who are unarmed.

So how should the police handle this situation differently? Should they have waited to get shot at?

Police in the US deal with this situation all the time, the public and the government support them, and the criminals for the most part know that if they are armed and resist, they will get shot so they don't resist.

While it is perfectly acceptable for pacifists to protest peacefully, what happened afterwards is that opportunistic criminals hijacked these protests and used it as an reason to steal, kill and destroy property. It is what it is, lets not over complicate it.

In deference to MTI's point, none of knows exactly what happened and so, we most likely are hasty in our conclusions. Our conclusions are most likely a reflection of our own biases rather than the facts of the incident.

Give it some thought.

I agree.

The worlds financial problems, along with other pressures, like oil/energy, water, environmental, and political, issues seems to be turning people into tenderboxes just waiting for a spark to ignite them.

We start fighting over trivial details, and suddenly, poof, riots in the streets.

Drivvel. The scum rioting in Britain have no financial problems. As alabassi said, they all live on the dole. There has always been a large underclass of trash in Britain and the tendency of them to riot is nothing new. It's the reason the London Metropolitan police were formed way back in the 17th or 18th centrury I think. Stop making excuses for these scum Rich. It's pathetic.

Well, they're sure not trying to solve their financial problems. Please explain how yobbos throwing rocks through the windows of my (newly-married) cousin's car benefited anyone other than the window installer financially. Nothing was stolen, the car was just vandalized by rampaging imbeciles.

BTW- He's a teacher, not a police officer or mega-rich politico, so they just hurt someone who was on their side.
