Optical illusion.

I still don't get it. Why are the other squares dark when they are next to the light one where the light one is moved to? Unless they really are dark but.... oh screw it. Cool illusion.

I'm wondering if your eye would register the same thing or is it just a camera trick. I also would have liked to see her move the card around some of the other pieces in different light to show the effect.

We seek patterns, and sometimes our mind supplies them even when they do not actually exist.

Koffka ring, which is a uniform gray ring on light and dark backgrounds. Yes, the ring is the same gray color in a, b and c.

Enjoy!

Interesting. If I stare at one spot on the picture, I can force the ring to look the same color on both sides but if I move my eye just a little, it reverts back to the appearance of two shades.

This link works better -

non-embedded

These are examples of the limitation of subjective perception.

There are numerous examples.

We do not accurately perceive.

We must be taught our limitations and how to work within our limits.

OK. So I see this over and over and I still do not get it. There is a checker board pattern on the display right? How is it she moves a square that looks lighter from the shade area to a non shaded area beside two dark squares and they all end up being they same color? Yet the other light squares are not the same color as the light square she moved in the first place but they actually all look like the same color?

Are their actually 3 colors involved since there is a checker board pattern?

I want my minute back.

It shouldn't come as a surprise that color in "shade" will appear different than the same color unshaded, etc. Our cars paint does the same thing.

That makes it clear as mud. I understand the mud a little better now. I need to see it in real life to understand how it works. I'm a touchy feelly kind of guy.

.

We often perceive by comparison.

In one setting an object differs from its immediate surroundings in such a way that the brain tell us it has one quality.

If the same object is in a different environment, that is that it differs from its surroundings differently than in the first instance then the brain tells us it has a different quality.

What the example is showing is that human perceptions are NOT the same as analytical equipment.

It's designed to tell us that we shouldn't be quite so ready to be certain about our internal constructs until we have tested them.

Hope my comments help.
