Art sends rare W.H. message on race

Quote:
Norman Rockwell’s “The Problem We All Live With,” installed in the White House last month, shows U.S. marshals escorting Ruby Bridges, a 6-year-old African-American girl, into a New Orleans elementary school in 1960 as court-ordered integration met with an angry and defiant response from the white community.

I've read so much about this event and it still angers me that the Federal government used that little girl as a guinea pig and that her parents used her as well. Did they mean well? Maybe. Maybe they were after a little bit of vengeance toward the people that brought them Jim Crow. Was it worth it? Maybe. Could it have been done differently and better? Most likely.
I don't give a crap that she had tons of protection. This was no the job for a six year-old. Why weren't high schoolers used, instead? Better yet, why didn't the school board send white teachers to teach at the "black" schools to ease into integration? If they refused, as they did at Frantz Elementary, to teach black students...fire them. This whole story makes my blood boil.
Rant over.
Powerful picture. One of my favorite from Rockwell.

Good points. It depends on what the girl thought. Did anyone interview her later in life to get her point of view.

Have you read it? What was/is her take on the event?

I can't remember that much of what happened to me at 6, 7, or even 8 years old. I would think that anything she "remembers" would be coming from other sources and definitely through a subjective "filter." She seems to still be active in civil rights issues and seems to be fairly "normal" for having been through that time in her life.
I just think that it was ill-advised, both by Ike's administration and the local NAACP chapter to put a small child in that powder keg of a situation. She had death threats! A six year-old kid who should have been protected from that!
It needed to happen but not with her as the test subject. Get some high-schoolers that can process that mess.
Rant over again.

I remember very specific events that were traumatizing to me at a very very young age like they were yesterday.

I remember sitting in the foot area of the haunted house ride with mom and dad because it scared the living crap out of me.

I remember having my pinky on my right hand shredded in a pulley when my brother was dredging the lake.

I remember being jacked up in my parents green Plymouth when we had a flat tire (right rear). Mom thought I would like it.

According to mom and dad, I was between 4-7 for these events. Mom had a memory like a sponge.

I'm willing to bet she remembers every second of those first few days and quite a bit from the rest of the year.

She would be an interesting test case for the repressed memory advocates.

I wouldn't want to be the one that suggested a 6 year-old should make that kind of decision.

Rockwell was a prince of a painter. We're not supposed to like his art any more. I suspect because it tells a story directly, without any art education or sophistication required. How plebeian.

That's what happens when you invent cameras.

She said she remembers a woman protesting outside the school with a small black baby doll in a coffin. She said it scared her more than any of the shouting or slurs.

Rembrandt may have an idea or two on that.
