I'm agnostic and my wife was raised Catholic. While not a regular church-goer or strict practitioner by any means, I know her religion does mean more to her than my lack of one means to me. Our kids are being raised Catholic but their exposure to me will obviously temper whatever they're taught in CCD or on the rare occasion they do go to church. The church they attend is viewed by the other churches as not being stringent enough, which is just fine by me.
I figure if nothing else, at least they'll be able to get married in a church if that's important to them. I know getting married in my parents' backyard by a Justice of the Peace caused some friction but it was our only choice. Well, not only. But most logical. As well as being a Godfather or Godmother if the opportunity presents itself. (My youngest actually has two Godmothers because none of my immediate family members or remaining friends are Catholic, nevermind religious, and after 4 kids we ran out of guys.) I don't think being raised in a religion is bad in and of itself as long as their minds remain open to other beliefs or possibilities. Of course, parents are the primary drivers of that.

For me, it bordered around 2 words "Prove it". No proof, don't exist. Label it under "Superstitious Beliefs" or "Psychology" and chuck it in the "Circular File". OTOH, I'd probably not fit in under Atheist. More like Agnostic. You prove it, I'll buy it.

Remember this if you are filled with unbelief and are against Christianity and the Bible. There is no guarantee that your plans will work. The prominent atheist Christopher Hitchens has a brother named Peter. Peter has recently released a book, "The Rage Against God", with a subtitle of "How atheism led me to faith". The short review that I have read goes on to state, "At a young age, Peter Hitchens, brother of prominent atheist Christoper Hitchens, burned his Bible and repudiated Christianity, later becoming a Trotskyist. While serving as a journalist in Moscow, Hitchens witnessed the spiritual bankruptcy of the atheistic state that tried to destroy Christianity. Troubled and disillusioned, Hitchens eventually returned to Christianity. "The Rage Against God"- Hitchens successful attempt to debate religion with his brother - gives a somber warning to Christians in the West, especially his native Britian, to guard and nourish their spirtual heritage. (Zondervan Publishing) Copied from the Banner, April 2011 www.thebanner.org The Banner is the official publication of the Christian Reformed Church
