Read about the fire burning in your neck of the woods, just checking to see if both of you are doing OK.

From what I could gather out of the TV news, I don't think there is fire anywhere near Randy, but it looks like it is one county away from Greg, maybe 10 to 20 miles.

Hey Palangi, long time.

From the news, as portrayed here in Califas, it was a little hard to say just where the fire was. Figured it closer to Greg but Randy was talking about it being pretty dry out to the Berry Farm. Too long in CA has given me knowledge on how far and how fast these fires can burn so it seemed this one could stretch out to Randy in short order. I suppose I should have checked the Austin news for better info but since I was at work when I posted I went quick and dirty.

I remember the Texas drought of the late 60's. It was nightly on the Houston news about all the cattle dying, or being put down, due to the lack of water. Inconceivable for a youngun in East Texas to imagine that another part of the state could be so brown and dry when everything in the Piney Woods was relatively green. A few years and a lot of learning changed that image.

EDIT: Just checked Fox, they're reporting the fire to be in the Bastrop area. As I recall, Randy's place is due north of there, but probably a safe distance for now, Greg's is a little west of there. Unknown which direction the winds are pushing the fire and the report did not state the level of containment.

He was OK last week! Says he's pretty busy but will respond to PMs

Ive been out to rleos place some 5 yrs ago for a mercedes meet ,great guy ,his land and loved ones are all right I hope.The wind has been the biggest problem lately and this is a very big deal effecting huge land areas across Texas.We really need a huge tropical storm to wave a sigh of relief over Texas and surrounding areas,hate to say hurricane but a small one would be welcomed also.

R leo is a long ways from the fire east if Austin, but lethermang is 10 miles form the lost pines,-east of bastrop. If that fire got into the pine forrest it certainly would have got a LOT of the forrest and surely would have made the news.

The bad Bastrop fires were to the south of us. 500 homes burned in that fire and fires to the west of Austin. Some acquaintances of ours live in Steiner Ranch (west of Austin) and had to evacuate. Don't know their status.

The problem was the damned wind and ultra low humidity (11%)...it was positively howling Saturday -> Monday...gusting to 40 out here and any conflagration would become immediately uncontainable. Our place is to the south of the Farm-to-Market road that passes by and I live in mortal fear of someone driving through, flicking out a cig butt and burning us out. Our hut is at the back of the place, 1/2 mi from the paved road and with a wind like we had last weekend, a fire would be on us before we could do much, if anything about it.

The fire plan last weekend, if the ***** truly hit the fan, would have been to grab the dogs (all four) turn on all the sprinklers around the house and haul ass to the south, busting any fences we came to escape (I carry bolt cutters in all the ranch buggies), releasing any livestock we could save and then try to flank the fire by heading to the west through pastures. To the north, there are deep ravines that are hard to cross on foot or wheeled vehicle. I don't know what the terrain is like to the east of us and would only head that way as a last resort.

If there's anything good about the drought, it would be that there's barely any grass left so there's not a whole lot of fuel in the open spaces.

My heart goes out to those that have lost their homes (and whatever else) in this mess.

Greg posted something in the cars for sale section this morning, so it looks like he is still kicking.

I believe I was incorrect about the county though. Looking at a better map, I think he may be in Bastrop County, so I don't know how close the fire is to him.

Greg lives near the intersection of Arbuckle Rd and FM 1704. He's maybe 10-15mi WNW of the Bastrop fires.

Glad to hear you're doing OK Randy, hopefully the fire is moving away from Greg's place. I do have other friends in the Lost Pines and no way to check on them, so I have to hope for the best for them for now.

hmm -I thought you were in Brenham. So did any of the pine forrest catch on fire? It seems like it would have completely burned if it got in there as dry as it is.
