I still love my VERY old Trek Y33. Best bike I have had and I still hit the trails with it. Although I have a one-off custom frame. Sorta went through a few frames.... Anyway, never was a Cannon fan, but not for any reason. Just stuck with my Treks and Fishers.

One newer member who just got a sunroof tray from me for his TD was mentioning a bamboo bike he is planning on fabricating out of ordinary fishing pole bamboo, He said theres a NYC nonprofit outfit giving classes here and you build your own in a two day class $1000.00 goes to teaching africans how to build theirs free.

Those bamboo bikes are pretty wild. I first heard about them on some show on Green Planet about these guys who set up a bus to run on VO and were going across country visiting different folks with sustainable projects. Surprisingly (at least to me) strong!

I've wondered if the same could be done with Japanese Knotweed, which is similar visually to bamboo and does have a "compartmentalized" trunk. I'm not sure if the structure is the same, though. The crap grows like a weed up here and is really invasive. I suppose I could just cut a bunch and dry it then soak it with epoxy and see what it's like.

I met a guy the other day with a bamboo bike. He had bamboo tubing but they were inserted into steel lugs.

Caught my eye as well. Whether or not it's a good design is difficult to discern at this distance. Someone thought it was anyway.

They had a piece about those on NPR's "Living on the Earth." Less metal to make them more accessible to third worlders, as well as less energy intensive for the high tech realms too. I'd like to see one, make one perhaps.
