New Benz....

I haven't been here in a while. I got a call this morning that my grandmother was ready to sell her car. Actually she was ready because the insurance company hiked her rate up sky high because of her age. Anyway I jumped at the chance to buy her car. She's the original owner and its been garage kept since new. Its pretty clean but needs a few things. It's an '84 300SD with orient red paint and palomino leather inside. The odometer is broken and stopped at 86k , but I sure it has just a notch over 100k and runs and shifts great. I drove it all day today without a hitch. It needs ASAP new tires ( the michelins are 9 yrs old), wax, tint, A/C service, and a good cleaning. Most of the wood is in good shape. I think I'll get my mechanic to do a once over and fix anything that needs addressing. Its sure is good to be back in a Benz!

Sweet ride!

I wish my family wasn't so f'n cheap. No vintage Benzes, or anything worth snagging for that matter, on the way down the line.

I had a great uncle that bought a 240D brand new, must have been Forest Green over Palomino, that he took meticulous care of. It was dealer serviced and washed/detailed weekly whether it needed it or not.

Unfortunately it moved on well before I had an appreciation for them. Damn 20/20 hindsight.

Yeah I guess my grandparents were just Benz type of people. They also had a '98 ML320 but that thing was such a piece it was worth letting it go. I didnt want to see this one go.

Nice catch!

I just wanted to clarify that the "rolling eyes" was directed at my family for being cheap! (Looking back at it, I wanted to make sure there wasn't any confusion. )

My maternal grandparents always drove Chrysler products and my paternal grandfather always drove Fords/Lincolns. The Fords/Lincolns weren't actually that bad (had a Mustang GT convertible and a few Town Cars) but he would just drive them into the ground to the point where the maintenance headaches would exceed the bargain basement price (he wasn't big on maintaining stuff, he drive it until the repairs piled up then buy a new one). My mother's Tahoe would be about the only thing my father has bought in the last 20 years that I'd want. He's had a forgettable string of Chrysler products (Chrysler GTS, LeBaron convertible, PT Cruiser), that have all actually served him quite well, just none of them float my boat.

You lied, that's not a "NEW Benz" like the title says.

But it's BETTER than a new Benz.

Built better and will last longer if you fix it up and maintain it.

The 1981-1985 are the very best of the w126 diesels with their iron blocks and the tougest and longest lasting of the W126 dieaels, unlike the other ones, the 86-87 SDL and the 91 350 SD/SDL ones..

The durability, longevity and longevity of it is such, that with parts always being available, it will last you forever.

A million miles is actually realistically achievable in one of them.

Then there is the comfort, ease of repair, safety ancost no object build quality and classic Merceds Benz good looks.

Well done and well bought by you.!!.

Not "New".

But "Better than new" by far.

Congrats and good luck.

Beautiful SD! My 300D was also my grandma's, when she was selling it we also jumped on the chance. She was also the first owner.

Welcome to the "Benz stays in the family" club (if there is such a thing lol)

I had initially gotten the Mazda 3 and loved it. Then I went through a period of hating it. I missed my Benz so much. I recently had started to really like driving the Mazda. I was enjoying the crap out of it. Now after 2 days of having the Benz again, I don't even want to look at the Mazda. I was driving tonight with such a huge smile on my face sucking uip the smell of the car. I could drive all night! Funny how I could dismiss a car so new for such an old bucket of bolts. I am getting so much crap at work for buying such an old "money pit" but I don't care.

Inhaling diesel fumes can do that, it has been known to happen.
