Can I just ask one question? Why would you go hiking in an area known for conflict and anti-US sentiment? I guess the Appalachian Trail was too tame.

idiots are lucky to still be alive. Might not be able to say the same thing after 8 years in their prison system although the Iranian government would be stupid to treat them poorly for diplomatic reasons.

That was my question as well. Out of all the places on the planet, you go to a war torn country that has a boarder with a totalitarian country who also has a stated hatred for anything American.
Even assuming for a moment that they were just hiking, I am somewhat of the opinion that they deserve what they got. How freaking stupid. I am not convinced that they were just hikers although I have nothing to substantiate that other than the fact that I have a hard time believing anyone can be that stupid. I know I know, there are lots of stupid people on the planet and they just might be at the top of the class.

I think the Iranians were right and for exactly the reasons everybody here states. NOBODY who has the wherewithal to organize and finance a trip to that godforsaken hellhole could do it without knowledge of the peril. Ignorance simply does not wash. So they were either one-off drug traffickers or tools of the CIA.

You maybe right. That's the neat thing about foil-hat conspiracies.
It is of course, purely coincidental that most of the presidents of the last half-century or so have been Ivy Leaguers. Including our most recent four. And many on the Supreme Court.
