It's hard to beat the sex appeal of omnipotence.

Why is it a good idea to make fun of a person's religious beliefs?

kerry 09-15-2011 12:34 AM

Why do we laugh at all? It's got to be the same reason why America's Funniest Videos was a no-brainer for success once camcorders became widespread enough to record infinite footage of life's everyday idiocies and misfortunes.

I've been wondering the same for some time now. It seems that in the past year or so, it's become fair game here like never before. Beats me.

Maybe it's because so many of these candidates have starting pushing their faith into the public eye. Rick Perry prays for rain. Bachman says god's trying to send us a message with earthquakes and hurricanes. They're easy targets.

It goes beyond the "easy targets." I have seen multiple insinuations that faith is somehow a fool's fantasy by multiple members here; those were not aimed solely at political candidates, either.

For the record, yes, I agree that Bachman/Perry/et al's references to faith go a bit over the top at times. They comes across as petty and pandering. I have a hard time condoning commensurate retaliatory behavior, however (that is to say, I think your original post is the definition of petty). So many of your posts are quite thoughtful and well-reasoned. This (the original, I mean) certainly isn't one of them.

Just sayin' -- it's nice when people don't feel the need to appeal to the lowest common denominator to make a valid point. And it's just something I noticed happening more frequently lately. Pointing out the hypocrisy of these candidates is perfectly fine... it would just be nice to see it done with some tact.

Here's an interesting piece on Bachmann's views on husbands and wives:

I don't think there's much hypocrisy going on. I think the original video is an honest expression of her views. Would anyone who didn't believe it, say what she said?
It's roughly on a par with Tom Cruise's rant against psychiatrists based on his Scientology. If he were running for office, that rant would be fair game.
