Hurricane Irene got my boat

Got a letter from the marina in upstate NY where I store my Ranger 33 sailboat. Irene got it. It was stored on jackstands and the winds picked it up off the jackstands and blew it over. Put a hole in the hull apparently. Haven't seen pictures yet. They took off the mast and managed to right the boat. Don't know if its repairable yet.

No, it's a keelboat I've owned for quite a while. Haven't had it in the water for a while. We used to live on it in the summertime on Lake Ontario.

Looks like this except ours is red with a wooden toerail and has a hole in it.

That sucks. Did they send the letter via Pony Express?

Hope it works out in your favor. My aunt wasn't terribly disappointed to have a tree flatten her unoccupied cottage during Irene. Full replacement cost didn't look too bad compared to '40's vintage seasonal construction.

The letter arrived quite a while ago. I thought it was just a bill for summer storage so put it in my wife's bills-to-pay pile without opening it. She opened it last night.
I suppose it's possible things might turn out well. I'm attached to the boat and my daughter is even more attached to it since she spent summers on it when she was very young and impressionable.

I can relate somewhat. My parents just sold their boat last year after 25 years and two pairs of engines. It was our "summer home" all through my high school and college years and each of my kids spent many weekends with my parents. It was just getting too big for them to handle themselves. It was tough to take when we tossed the new owners the docklines and watched the idle out the channel for the last time.

Good luck, hopefully they can repair it and keep those memories coming!

Damn sorry to hear that. Ranger 33s are nice boats and quite popular here on SF Bay. I used to own a Ranger 26. Both good Gary Mull designs

Oh man, that's tough, Kerry. Repairable, I hope. IIRC, you're pretty handy with tools.

Hey, it's a project!

J/K. Hope it works out for you.

Yep, it is a nice boat and I was really lucky to buy it. It was/is out of my socioeconomic range. I had flown to NY and gone to a rural marina to look at a 28' Lancer which was pushing my size and $$ limit. A friend who was with me started wandering around the yard looking at boats and talking to the manager. He said the owner of the Ranger was getting out of boating and was selling. A little investigation revealed he had actually already gotten out of boating. Rather than facing the trouble of selling the boat he had donated it to a charity located 50 miles away that typically accepted donated cars. They had not seen the boat, knew nothing about boats, were not interested in seeing the boat and only wanted to get if off their hands. They were asking X. I offered 1/2X, contingent on a survey. They accepted. Survey revealed a few minor problems and price was reduced further. Ended up paying considerably less for the Ranger than the Lancer I had originally gone out there to see.
The biggest boat I had sailed before I got behind the wheel of the Ranger was a 12' Hobie Holder. Fair amount of pucker factor initially until I figured out that apart from docking, sailing a big keelboat is easier than sailing a Holder.

OOhh! (Envy)

Nice Vessel!

I'd sure look at it as: Better being "Holed" Ashore and Dry, than Pierced and Sunk.

The wunnerful thang about FRP is it can always be fixed,as long as there's
something Left Above the Rudder/Keel and Propeller.

It's insured. I hope it's a little better than the insurance I thought I had on my garage prior to the burglary.
