Big news around here

Soperton got a Huddle House. It is on I-16 at exit 67.
We now have three places to go out to eat within 5 or 6 miles of town. We're making some progress now.

I'm really happy for you. It is about 8 miles from my place to the nearest country cafe. It's 20 miles to where the places like Chili's, Applebees and the like.

To me, it's a small price to pay for peace and quiet along with the wildlife and serenity.

Watch out. Before you know it there will be a Walmart Supercenter around the corner (that's what happened here). Now the peaceful chirping of birds is punctuated by sounds of grease monkeys dropping lug wrenches.

There won't be a Wal Mart within 20 miles of my place for another 50 years. There ARE, however, occasionally the sounds of lug wrenches dropping on concrete out in my shop. Nobody around to hear it except my wife.

Grease monkeys? Nah, more like Mickey Dee's rejects if they work at a "shop" like Mall*Wart.

Same here. Approximately 35-40 to the closest chain dining other than a McD or DQ and we're fine with this.

The biggest drawback is that there's no decent BBQ nearby. The local BBQ joint, who apparently thinks that good BBQ brisket has ~3.5 gallons of sickly sweet sauce slathered over the top, recently had their big trailer mounted pit stolen off their property in broad daylight.

I maintain that this a good thing; as a public service, Circle-S should have had their pit(s) taken away years ago.

If a grease monkey dropped a lug wrench in the woods, would anybody hear it?

No! There would be no concrete for it to ring against.

The shop that was at my place when I moved there had a dirt floor. I removed and overhauled the engine in my '68 MB 230 four speed car. I was there a couple of years before pouring a concrete floor. I now have a bigger shop that I made by pouring a concrete floor in my hay barn, since I didn't bail square any more.

You just make do with what ya' got.

Built a new tin-walled shop next to the hay barn. Planning to pour a concrete floor in it when we contract the foundation on the big house.

I considered that for a while and then decided it would take a LOT of $$ and effort to get that old hay barn where I could have any sort of conditioned space. And, I still needed a hay barn. The old one isn't really big enough for a season's hay so we get creative when it comes to storing hay...I have 100 round bales in my neighbor's hay barn right now.

FWIW, I plan to spray foam insulate that new shop, stick a big window a/c in the wall (already have a big woodstove) and build in a small bunkroom/loft. It's going to be more than a workshop...if I have a sick animal, (I lost a donkey last winter to hypothermia) it will be a heated place that they can be penned in and cared for that's safe and out of the weather. The little bunkroom will be a place to crash if the place turns into a hospital or just extra beds when there are visitors at the farm.
