Tom you could always send it to the Federal Government to help pay down the debt.

Thank you all for your thoughts. I think the local paper may run lost and found ads free. I would want any responses not to come to me directly though. I don't think there are any legal issues.

Anybody ever turned found money over to the police?

If you run an ad, just say that the item was "something of value."

This way, only the authentic owner will be able to ID it.

I thought that having them tell the exact amount and the denomination of the bills would suffice and to tell me where it might have been dropped.

They would have to know where they were at the correct time of the day that I found it.

Give it to the police. Tell them where/when and leave it to them.

Oddly enough, Tom, I was just in Indiana the other day when I misplaced a small roll of cash. Can't remember the exact amount but I think it was twenty-one or maybe nine hundred-and-something dollars in American bills.

Perhaps that was mine . . .

If you are living reasonably comfortably, I'd go with Botnst's suggestion of an anonymous contribution.

If the economy has put a beating on you, watch for postings in local papers / bulletin boards / etc for several weeks. After that, maybe take out a big group of old friends to a nice dinner, ball game, concert, etc.

I'd think if you advertise your find you will be swarmed with scumbags trying to cash in on an easy buck.

I don't see many folks keeping big wads of cash in their pockets. Most (honest?) people seem to use plastic these days. Good chance whoever dropped it gained it by less than respectable means.

They would probably get all excited that some one was giving them money & end up spending twice as much!!!

Best make sure who ever gets it spends it wisely.

Maybe a local school could use some library books on drug education.

That's kinda a big assumption there. And not really an altogether true one. I use cash. No plastic. I know others who do the same. While it is true that I keep it in a wallet with other items (including plastic, for emergencies), others I know carry it seperately, as a wallet can get quite large to sit on.

And we all get, and even use, our cash honestly.

How about this for a general question:

Should one keep what one has not earned?

As a former firefighter myself, I would have to agree with that statement.
