Jaguar engine question

Neighbor has a 2000 Jaguar xk-8 with 50k miles on it. Yesterday it came home on a flatbed and I went over to talk to her. She had tried to start it in a Target parking lot and it made funny noises and wouldn't run right so she had it towed home. She started it while I was there and it ran but lacked power and wouldn't run right. Today she had it towed to a shop and they told her the right side timing chain broke. No compression in cylinder 1. She's wondering what to do with it. Mechanic figures bent valves but doesn't know if the pistons were harmed. Should she have the head pulled ($1500 labor) to check the pistons? Should she look for a used engine and have the engine replaced? Should she sell it with a bad engine? Any advice out there? Seems odd to me that the timing chain would break with that low a miles on the car. Anyone know if chains are a problem on these cars. She says its a Ford engine.

Here's the answer as to the cause of the problem:

Jaguar V8 Secondary Tensioners - Preventive Replacement

For $200 it would move from their side of the street to mine.

Well, it sure ain't worth Jack now. $200 is a good deal for an 11 year old Jag.

Had an XJR and replaced the tensioners as a preventative measure.

My friend Bob bought an XJ8 with the same issue and was able to bring it back to life without pulling the head. The timing chain broke but it did not bend the valve. Are we sure cylinder 1 was reading zero or was it just low. These nikisil sleeved engines can have low compression numbers cold.

Bob buys fixers like this all the time and pays decent money for them. I'm guessing it would be worth about 10k running and driving perfectly. 2-4k is what I guess it would bring salvage. Amateurs on the higher end, pros on the low end.

copart will give her a bid over the phone, and that would be the starting point. Though I'm reasonably certain Bob would give more.

If this didn't happen to her the transmission would probably have gone soon as well. The XJ8s got a very weak tranny. XJRs got the 722 Mercedes tranny. By 2003 the tensioner issue was resolved.

She told me the mechanic said no compression. They ran the engine after the problem appeared so I'm guessing the valves are bent. If your friend Bob is interested in it, pm me. They're disgusted with it and might want to just sell it as is. I could get him pictures if he wants.

I seem to remember it is ford based....castings only perhaps but I suspect many of the acillaries would be ford as well.....not that there is anything wrong with that.

That tenshioner problem is almost as bad as the one on the M116 380's. Later models had redesigned tensioners.

Yeah it happened to my Grandmothers wonderful pile of an XJ8, I think it was like $3k to fix.

Happened exactly a year after the crappy ZF gear box gave up the ghost.

I'd put a long block in it, the 2000 and earlier engines tend to lose compression eventually. Not worth doing the heads on one IMHO.

For the dealer to go through that engine and replace what is mentioned in the link I bet you are looking at $5k. The question is, is the car worth it. Sell it for $1k and count your self lucky.

I wonder if it is possible to swap in a mUstang motor? In todays world with the computers controlling everything it might not work. OTOH some of that stuff might be the same so a bolt in swap might work.
