MAC OS Question

I bought my wife a new iPod Nano. Plugged it into my 4+ year old Mac laptop.

The iPod requires iTunes 10.0 or later. I downloaded the new version, but won't install with my OS 10.4.11

Time for a new Mac? Will this old thing support a newer OS?

TIA!

What new version did you DL? It might be too new, but I would think a 4 year old laptop would run 10.5...my Powerbook won't but it's 8 years old. What model and processor do you have?
I have a 3 year old MacBook running Snow Leopard. 10.6

I bought this MacBook in '06. It has the 2 GHz Intel Core Duo.

I've been looking for an excuse to buy an iPhone. Possible to hookup an iPod to an iPhone on xfer tunes?

Sounds like you'll need Leopard or Snow Leopard.

I recently installed SL on my MacBook, it came with Leopard. It has the same processor as yours.

A Core2 Duo should run the latest OS. Perhaps your "download" was iffy?

Snow Leopard requirements

System Requirements

Mac computer with an Intel processor
1GB of memory
5GB of available disk space
DVD drive for installation

Sounds like you meet the minimum conditions. It's 29 bucks. Here:

Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.)

If you've got an Apple Store nearby, you can get the DVD hard copy.

The Apple store won't have it, you need to order it, I found out the hard way, took a week.

You may be able to download from Cnet, same price.

You might need to have Leopard to install SL, I need to have SL to install Lion.
snow leopard download - CNET

Snow Leopard does not need Leopard to install. The Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD can do a full clean install and then with any Core 2 Duo Mac, you can then upgrade to Lion via the App Store.

I simply put the cd-rom in and hit install, took around an hour.

They send 10.6.3, the updates to 10.6.8 took that long too, so be prepared to spend some time when you get it.

They also told I'd have to sign for it, via FedEx. Neither occurred, regular USPS.

Too much trouble to order the thing -- BitTorrent it, call it a day, and lose Apple $29.99.

Don't think I would feel comfortable running a pirated OS. $29.- is not much money for peace of mind.

Apple loses exactly nothing when the OS is pirated. Unlike M$, they aren't in the business of selling an operating system. That's why WinDoze costs over a hundred bucks. Stealing software is it's own reward.
