It sometimes amazes me when the first thing ppl ask me in regards to their "service" on their MB and BMW is how much is it going to cost. Had a lady ask me the other day in regards to a late model 528i. I told her the oil alone is going to run $40. I guess she has been reading about the $19.99 oil changes at the quick lube place:). If they can't afford to maintain these nice, expensive new cars by the book then they should be driving a Honda. I am of the opinion that you can get any MB, BMW, Honda (just to name a few) to a million miles if you have a proper maintence procedure.

Wow. I always wanted to have a million mile car. I was talking to some people once and they were talking about their recent purchase of a lexus. I said what about benz? They told me they looked at the C class but said that the lexus service charges were about $20 cheaper so thats why they went with the lexus.

Our 1998 Accord has about 165,000 miles, so it's too early to start bragging about it. Even so, the build quality on that car is probably the best of any car I've owned. It also has the best dashboard design of any car I've owned, much better than my Benz or BMW.

They made a buying decision for a luxury class automobile over twenty bucks?? It's true, Mercedes service is not inexpensive, they are both great cars however it depends which car someone wants. Lexus has certainly made a name for themselves in the marketplace which turns up the heat on Mercedes. In the end, the consumer wins.

It is cheap compared to say a Ferrari though:).

You talk a lot about Ferraris, did you do something nasty when you test drove that Ferrari? :D:eek::D

I have always felt that at about 200k miles on an average honda or toyota. The requirements for more parts and decreasing reliability are going to raise their heads.

A car on constant highway use may be a lot better and go a lot further before this occurs though. Eighty percent of our cars usage is spent very locally. All these very short trips are hard on them.

What may suprise some is many components that are maintenance items in other cars are lifetime components in honda. This suprised me and does factor into more value and less service bills.

Resulting in more money in your pocket over the long haul in my opinion. Especially with the greater retained resale value. Really people should think about these things before deciding what to purchase.

No I do not and never have owned a honda but some members of my family do and I have watched. I suspect we are going to try one.

Locally hyundai are grabbing a large segment of the market. I have worked on a few mid two thousand models. Not really all that impressed with the lack of attention to detail in the engineering and execution in many areas.

funny that they gave him a new car. :D thats the type of guy who sells the new car, and keeps driving the car he likes. Would have made more sense to completely restore the 1990 honda to like new status and give it back to him

according to my calculator, he put just under 62K on that car a year since he bought it in 96, or averaged about 170 miles a day, 365 days a year. Impressive

Of course, with a '90 Honda (and probably the new ones as well), one can still perform basic preventive maintenance such as checking fluid levels. Compared to many German makers, which have been busy eliminating simple ways to check transmission fluids or engine oil levels. A move that seems more designed to enhance dealer profit, than vehicle longevity.

My friend has a Prius, parts keep falling off and the build quality is the worst of any car I have ever seen hands down.

Here is the funny thing, he insists that Toyota is #1 in quality. Which is not true. But there are different ways to look into "quality". If measured by mechanics alone, they probably do very well. But that is NOT "build" quality, thats mechanical. The "build" quality, like I said, is a joke. He bough the car new. There is a rattle on the passenger side by the windshield. He took it in twice, they still cent solve it. So he does not drive between 50 and 63 mph if he can avoid it! lol

IMHO this is what they should have done. The man obviously liked the car :)

Irv's P1800 has been almost totally rebuilt...except it's the origibnal block. Volvo has been paying the bill for maintainence ever since 1 million miles. He gets his service for free at volvoville on Long Island.

then the car is basically a new car; I understand that a Merc diesel holds the world record for most miles on ORIGINAL non-rebuilt engine and non-rebuilt transmission.
