F1 coming to New Jersey!!

Big news! F1 is coming to New Jersey for a street course in 2013...Ol' Bernie is planning to have a news conference shortly

Here's a link to an article in the Daily Mail
F1 New Jersey race in 2013: Monaco course with views of Manhattan | Mail Online

Good luck with that.
F1 came to Baltimore last month ( Labor Day). There were glowing promises of hundreds of $$Millions to be spent etc.
Now, the first actual reports are coming in and it seems ( surprise, surprise) that the actual spending in Baltimore was just about what was spent on any typical Labor Day weekend. So who picks up the tab for the extensive work done to prepare for the race? The gas company spent $$millions---the race promoters said that all the manholes needed to be welded shut to keep them from being sucked up by the cars---the gas company said--we better fix the leaks BEFORE anyone welds those manholes covers. You Think!!
It was a great event for those who participated; however, the reality of the income was far less than advertised.

^F1 or IRL? Because F1 hasn't been in the US since the last US GP at Indy.

WSJ seems pretty confident

Formula One Is Coming to New Jersey in 2013 - WSJ.com

I'm trying to find a feed of the press conference but I guess I'll have to just wait for secondary reports :(

MTI 10-25-2011 01:43 PM

The WSJ was also very confident that Sprint had paid Apple billions for the exclusive right to the most recent iPhone. ;)

Yes, Formula 1 seems to do a lot of one night, er one year stands. They were in Dallas in '86 and the track had been laid down especially for them. They got the asphalt mix wrong and the raced was on a triple digit day. The track was peeling up all through the race and they said they'd never come back and they haven't. I think this one year event kind of thing has happened in many places in the world.

The only places that have Formula 1 year after year are the old stops like Monaco, Hockenheim, Nurburgring and the like.

Texas is back in the lineup. Isn't it Austin November 18th 2012?

Yep, they've got a 10 year contract with the track in Austin. I'd love to go see that. Allegedly this NJ one will also be a 10 year contract but I'm awaiting the press conference which should answer a lot of these questions

I distinctly remember attending the 89 Dallas event

F1 in Joisey?

Just wait until all the cars are stripped of parts the night before the race and every homie in Weehauken has a F1 wing and 4 slicks on his ride!!!

I have a better idea...why don't they hold it in LaGuardia Airport? The service roads and parking lot access ramps are just like Monaco and the cabbies drive it like its an F1 track anyway!

MTI 10-25-2011 03:11 PM

The cars with EZ-Pass may hold an advantage. :D

I don't think it was '89, but it might have been. My son was very small and somehow we stumbled into the pits without a pit pass. I'm pretty sure that race was before we moved where we are now and we moved in December '86.

I have a picture of him standing next to a Ferrari team car on jack stands with no wheels.

I also still have a cap that I bought that day that has never been worn.

I could be wrong. This was the one at Fair Park that you went to?

Edit: I just googled it up and we were both wrong. It was 1984.

Like, you think its only a coincidence that the battleship New Jersey is sitting in the Delaware river with its main batteries pointed at Camden?

That would be a lot of fun. Hopefully I can make it to the Austin race.
