Poor white kids in rural Kansas taught by underpaid teachers...

Can outperform nearly every other peer group on the planet in academics.
School is now in session.

There's something to be said for small class sizes.

Our school will never get those kinds of scores with all their equal opportunity policies.

Thanks for posting this MTU!

I have also been saying all along, that it is not money that makes an effective school system.

You could take a falling down barn with junky built furniture and a wood stove for heat, and if you put the right teacher in that classroom and don't stifle them with rules that prevent an orderly classroom, this is the kind of results you can get.

My Grand Dad had a sixth grade education, but those six years were QUALITY years. He got a very sound basis of knowledge and coupled with his own self motivation he educated himself beyond the level of many college graduates. He had an impressive library and had done LOTS of self study.

A neighbor of mine who was a WWII soldier was educated in a local three room school house. His teachers taught math all the way through Trig & Calculus and because one of them spoke German, he left high school fluent in German. He told really interesting stories of how he understood what some German POW's were saying about their plans to escape and was able to contribute greatly to preventing an uprising. He was a really savvy guy, a close friend and a great neighbor who we lost about 10 years ago.

The school system is just something is not corrected by throwing money at it. It requires dedicated people and orderly classrooms.

Remember that the number one job for a teachers union is the pay and benefits for their members. The children are simply used to reach that objective.

Now you are getting it. Apply the same concept to Government, Big Business, Political Parties, News Media, Entertainment, "Health Care", Charities, etc, etc, etc.

It changes the conversation about almost everything discussed here. Like, "Who you gonna vote for? The thief or the other thief?" "Which News source you gonna believe? The lying entertainer or the other lying entertainer?" Welcome to the Disney impersonation of what was (tried to be) the US. If you are not exploiting something, you are a poor, dumb sucker.

1) High levels of parental involvement (THE key, in my mind)
2) Small class sizes, particularly in the earliest grades
3) Continuity & communication - the teacher's hand off kids grade to grade with data, background, context

Pretty simple stuff, isn't it?

Travis says that high parental involvement is one of three main factors in the district's success. Almost every parent shows up for parent-teacher conferences at the elementary school level, he says, and participation stays high in the older grades as well.

There it is.

Problem is the bureaucrats are trying to build these mega $$ organizations so that they look bigger.

In their world a school with no students would be great.

Are there people that actually believe that the education system is there for the benefit of the students?

Some observations and quesitons. One it's a small district, in a racially homogenous area. They're all white. (they even had the balls to mention that in the article) And I'm guessing they are not subject to much influx of transients unlike the revolving doors in the schools where I work. Exactly what tests are being used to judge their comparrisons against students in Singapore for example? Another way of saying that is what would happen if these kids were taking international exams? I also note that the average teacher salery is "only" 40K. Hell it'd be nice if that were the "average" where I worked. Also the claim about them living in povety is bunk.

- Peter.

No mention of race other than "According to state data, most of the students are white"

Nowhere in the article does it say that, but it may be a good guess.

"The average student at the Waconda school district of 385 kids scores better than 90 percent of students in 20 developed countries on math and reading tests,"
I'm sure math is math, and reading comprehension is reading comprehension regardless of location on the planet or language used.

While we'd have to take into account cost of living, 40K income for a family of five in the USA is not poverty level; it would qualify for reduced lunches IIRC.

Bunk? How so? "65 percent of them qualify for free or reduced federal lunches, an indication that they live in poverty."

Sounds like these people care about their kids education, and are not worried about "poverty" like many poor people are in a big city. Makes an awful strong case for lower performing districts to adopt whatever behavior these people are using if indeed those traits can be identified and copied. I'd bet few districts will attempt to emulate them however. I do think that in a group of people that share a common background, education and society is easier to maintain. Norms are common, and what is expected of people is known. I know that's not a popular notion however.
