The earth is being chewed up for profit and the costs of that will be born by a much larger group than that which profited from the plunder.

The Okanogans Highlands Alliance has been monitoring the operation of the gold mine operating at Buckhorn Mountain in N. Central WA state. This after spending years trying to prevent it from starting up.

Fall 2011; Okanogan Highlands Alliance

Who woulda thought, the mining company is cutting corners on water quality protection, after going to great lengths to assert that utmost care would be taken in safeguarding water quality in the semi arid region:

Ground and surface water downgradient from the mine are being degraded by failure of the mine’s capture zone, unreliability of the groundwater flow model, and fluctuation of seasonal flows. If Crown/Kinross was doing everything that is required, everything that was committed to, and everything possible to protect the environment around Buckhorn Mountain, one might be sympathetic to the difficulty of controlling the impacts of large scale mining. However, that is not the case.

Shotcrete is required in the Buckhorn mine to prevent acid mine drainage that could develop because of potentially acid generating (PAG) rock in the Damaged Rock Zone (DRZ). The DRZ is the area in the mine fractured by blasting. Shotcrete is also supposed to be used as a barrier to prevent water from infiltrating into and out of the mine, which can spread contaminants.

The company has explained their failure to carry out the required shotcrete activity by mincing words, differentiating the requirements in the Development Rock Management Plan (DRMP) for PAG development rock from ore. However, the Damaged Rock Zone (DRZ) section of the DRMP clearly states that the shotcrete is intended to reduce the interaction of reactive rock from the mine walls with runoff/ seepage.

Ecology had instructed Crown/Kinross to place shotcrete in specific areas in the mine. When asked why shotcrete had not been placed in those areas, the company’s response was that Ecology had not put it in writing.

For two years in a row, spring rains have flushed through the larger than predicted quantities of waste rock piles stored on the surface, sending contaminants downstream. The system for reporting runoff from the waste rock is inadequate and ineffective. Once a month monitoring is likely to miss the spike in contaminants, leaving the degree of the pollution unrecorded.

I posted them as an example. They will make billions selling chicken. In the process, they will pour tons of arsenic and poultry waste into the ground water. And those of us who want them to pay to clean it up are "environmental whackos" while they will be protected from those costs by their corporate lobbyists who will pay legal bribery in the form of "campaign contributions" to the crooks in our legislatures. And I agree, multiply this by a zillion corporations.

It appears that the woman in east Texas who was referenced in the second Pilgrim's Pride article is trying to salvage hers. Any sympathy, Larry?
